Given the disproportionate funding for police and prisons in the US, yes, I do think some of the funds currently given to police should be reassigned. I think spending should prioritize things like community health and education instead of police officers.

While there is no contemporary example of defunding in the US, there are studies suggesting that less policing could mean less crime. In 2014 and 2015, New York officers staged a “slowdown” to protest the mayor, arguing that if they did less police work, the city would be less safe. But the opposite turned out to be true. When the officers took a break from “broken windows policing”, meaning targeting low-level offenses, there was a drop in crime. Researchers posited that aggressive policing on the streets for petty matters can ultimately cause social disruption and lead to more crime. Policing that punishes poverty, such as hefty traffic tickets and debts, can also create conditions where crime is more likely. When New York ended “stop and frisk”, crime did not rise.

I certainly believe that the militarized police force is a major problem and their aggressive response to the protests has contributed to a lot of the street violence we've seen.

Some people have been calling for a total defunding of the police, I've seen arguments line that. I think it's stupid to even consider getting rid of the police force. But in the US is also stupid to pretend there aren't huge problems with the police that require some kind of structural overhaul.

But in the US is also stupid to pretend there aren't huge problems with the police that require some kind of structural overhaul.

They can start with qualified immunity, something ironically implemented to fight the KKK.
Disciplinaries should be by an external body.
Allowing those under investigation to resign/retire be abolished.
Those found guilty must go on a database and legally prohibited from ever working in any law enforcement agency again regardless of county/state so they don't just popup in another spot.
Better training, the demilitarized type.
Psychometric profiling before joining.
