So, what is the solution to the police "problem"? It is clearly evident that the USA needs police. Heck, it's evident in every country on earth because dipshits are always going to break the law. Back to the USA, though, and the current media/BLM narrative is that the police are heavily armed, militant, racist, aggressive, uneducated and trigger-happy. Roaming death squads, if you will.
If we apply the UK solution, the first step is to disarm them. Over here, the police officers who pack heat are effectively our SWAT team - only about 6500 in a population close to 70 million people. Everyone else gets a baton and a taser. Has this made criminals/thugs more receptive to the police and more compliant? Absolutely not. People here treat the police like ****, and have zero respect for them. They're sworn at, spat at, regularly attacked by groups (loads of footage available online of whole gangs of youths attacking police) or by individuals armed with machetes or axes, and they're unable to do anything about it.
The only way you could disarm the police in the US is if you disarm the population first, like the UK did after Dunblane. Of course, you're only disarming honest law-abiding citizens then anyway, not criminals, which is evident in a country like the UK which has banned personal carry but still has a significant amount of gun related crimes. Also, attempting to take away peoples' guns while you still have yours isn't going to go down very well with a lot of Americans (there are over 300 million firearms in circulation - they love their firepower over there).
Next step is to diversify the police force. It needs more people of colour to be able to relate to the various communities being policed, and more women. They regularly advertise diversity programs here in the UK and with great success. Are we ever going to have a significant portion of the Met being black? Of course not, it's not realistic in anyway. Only about 4% of our population is black. So does that make the Met racist? Absolutely not.
Of the 4 police officers at the scene in the George Floyd incident, 50% were non-white. Does America truly have a racist police force? I really don't think so. Badly trained and overworked, definitely. I also agree with the statement earlier that ex-military should be exempt from joining the police. You can't give someone whose only purpose for the last few years has been to kill that type of responsibility. I've seen interviews with veterans who even struggle to integrate back into society because they go into attack mode whenever they see a brown person in the street. They've been trained to see them as the enemy - how could they ever police them?
