GEORGE mayor Flip de Swardt has been ousted in a vote of no confidence in a special council meeting today (Wednesday 20).


The motion to dismiss the DA mayor was put forward by the ANC last week in what Southern Cape regional secretary Putco Mapitiza described as “an urgent move to bring stability to the council”.

He said the council had lurched from one disaster to another under De Swardt’s leadership.


Deputy mayor Mercia Draghoender (ID) will act in his place until a new mayor is elected.


The ID and DA coalition runs the council with the ANC in the opposition benches, but acrimony and disagreement within the partnership has, according to the ANC, left the town ungovernable and the opposition has asked the Western Cape government to put George under administration.

The new Legislation in action.... ANC takes over councils it thinks are not performing. Pretty easy - start a riot in a town and then take control of it.

DA's days are numbered in the Cape.

Incorrect... the 2nd in charge moves up until the dust settles and the legal things are done (Hearings and such processes) and then its open for Voting again (or appointment from the Leadership)
