:D Hey

Why isn’t cellc and virgin mobile going into the 3G / HSDPA? It might be to late some say or they will not have a good "share" of the market after mtn and vodacom - others say. What ever the case may be.

If they can stop the nonsence and get on this bus though it would be good for the market in South Africa. MTN,Vodacom is charging a lot for 3G / HSDPA compared to other countries in the world. In fact it is a shame! More competition will bring cheaper prices for all. It will be a big step up from the current "unstable" Edge , Gprs that Cellc and VB offer.

Take it like this if you basically can pay about the same for a Golf Chico 1300(CellC and VB) and a VW GTI - which one will you take? Obviously you will take the GTI because it offers a lot more for basically the same price. This is comparing Cellc data prices with MTN and Vodacom...

I mean lets face it unless you check the online banking or a few emails or down load a few games to your phone etc Edge and Gprs is "mickey mouse" - no matter what way you look at it.

So come on guys get on the freaking bus!!! Hell if you bring out 3G / HSDPA I will much rather support you than buying pre-paid MTN airtime to surf 3G

I couldn't find any real answer for that. A little while back my CellC contract was needing renewal, but before I did that I wanted to find out when they where going the broadband route.

The salesperson in the CellC shop told that CellC does not plan to get 3G, as they don't believe their userbase wants the service.

The representative on the CellC helpline told me that CellC definitely was getting 3G, but they don't know when, don't know anybody who does know when, and can't put me through to anyone who may know.

After a 6 week wait, I swapped over to Vodacom.

Good luck!

Well because the market in south africa is not that big on data services yet,so it makes more sense to stick to what makes more money and that is voice services.

Yes MTN and Vodacom 3G HSDPA is expensive , but why do you not use iBurst as that is cheeper and let me tell you it competes very well with other broadband services.

I have iBurst and get upto 1Mbps very fast.

Thanks

Cell C is targeting LSM 4-7 so they're unlikely to offer 3G anytime soon. They barely have enough cash flow to continue operating IIRC.

All the rumours. Cell C would definitely want to offer 3G and hsdpa. Unfortunately it's just not viable at the moment. Hsdpa would considerably reduce the delivery cost of data over gprs and edge but the network would have to be upgraded first to allow it. I would rather see the network upgraded first, edge is quite fast at maximum speed but the current network seems like it can only handle 2 users at one point and when a 3rd one joins the speed drops. Maybe I could use it again when Virgin sets a good price.

CellC's new tower in our town was completed on the 15/09/2007 but up to now still not activated. I've emailed CellC about it and i quote their response;

Thank you for making contact with us; we received your request about the activation of the Cell C Tower in your area. We apologize for any delays however our network department is unable to provide us with the timeframe. For further assistance please don’t hesitate to email us or contact our customer service on 140. Thank you for your patience

So with the holiday season coming up we'll just have to wait and see.

BTW guys, from next year mobile operators will be able to upgrade their EDGE networks to EDGE LTE. EDGE LTE supports speeds of up to 2Mb/s. It might be more cost effective for Cell C to take this approach instead of rolling out a new 3G radio network.

WireFree

Cell C upgraded all their towers to edge. It does not make sense to me to do that if they are planning to upgrade the network to handle 2Mb/s. Upgrading to 3G makes more sense as the future potential for more speed is there. The only benefit to edge is that is supports existing gsm communication which is likely to still be around for ages with better reception over a larger area.

From my previous experience in these things - Cell C would have brought the tower up at a huge price, and are probably paying a large amount of rent for the land/ roof on which it was built. The problem is the same reason it takes so long to get ADSL in this country - Telkom.

Telkom install the links from all the base stations to the main switches. So as much they would love for it to go up (especially since they would be losing money in the meantime) there are other factors involved. Which is why MTN and VC are trying to move away from Telkom, but rolling out fixed links is not easy and microwave is expensive.

 seems everytime you phone cell c or virgin about 3G they think your from the other networks RUBING IT IN

Well if the can't get 3G/hsdpa go ahead and market what you got! GPRS/edge. I mean virgin sells their data for 50c a meg? Why cant cell C ?

hoza-weekend? call it " my weekend " and maybe by gaving eg gprs or mms etc free for a weekEND,thus at lest some value will be added to this "FREE WEEKEND"........just maybe Cell C would at lest get up from their state and move with the bigdogs:p

PUSH-TO-TALK? EMAIL? USSD MEUN FOR PHONE SETTINGS? THERE SO MANY WAYS OF MAKING CELL C A GREAT NETWORK

They won't be giving away free data. The reason they can give free/cheap calls from Cell C to Cell C is because while it sounds great almost nobody actually uses it for the whole day. If they give away free data we would all be "abusing" it.

Don't forget rollover. ;)

Iburst cheaper then Vodacom prepaid?
This is new to me?
Have you compared the two?
I don't think you can actually compare the two as one is softcapped and the other hardcapped. Although they will probably claim to be uncapped now that Telkom is  uncapped.
