If you have a 4MB + ADSL line - do yourself a favour and get VPN
I very recently (last week) subscribed to an American ISP offering VPN - and with it a whole new world has opened up, for me in Durban with a SAIX 4mb line. I paid via PayPal an annual subscription (they have various packages) and their setup instructions are very detailed for all platforms including the iPhone / iPad etc.
Connection is immediate my line speeds tested on their servers in the USA, Holland and UK I get speeds in excess of that currently enjoyed through SAIX HOWEVER being allotted an American IP address opens up a world like no other.
Subscribing to Netflix, Hulu etc is an absolute joy - especially Netflix. I have found that unless your wifi connection is (on the iPhone / iPad) showing maximum strength the stream is not constant however if your ADSL is thru Ethernet, it is rock solid.
Another eye opener for me as a South African is Skype. Skype base per minute charges (with Skype Credit) on what IP you have. With an American IP when calling a American phone number, you are making a domestic call - and what is more interesting is (is just what SAFricans pay) comparing the rates offered by Skype to a SAF IP address to an American IP address.
VPN certainly has changed the equation - I am basically an American now to USA servers. I now have the freedom of logging into Amazon, Apple and countless other USA web servers without all the restrictions in place being foreign to US shores.
FOR MAC USERS:
As said set up is a piece of cake plus they have online live help 24/7 through Skype, Chat, Video etc. Activation to VPN is all done through Network Preferences. Once in place if you click "Connect" it (VPN) overides your wifi / Ethernet connection. Its sort of weird to be surfing on SAIX's backbone but have a US IP address. The other thing is as the helplines are open 24/7 if you have problems they will walk you through the steps or problem.
PS: The last time I posted in this Forum I got labelled a spammer. I have no affiliation whatsoever to strongvpn.com
