Getting a dog, any advice?

We have had 5 short-haired dachshunds in our home. Have 2 now, they are 5 years old and we got them from Dachshund Rescue
Loving, healthy, intelligent, not too expensive to feed

But a medium sized rescue dog will really enhance your life

My first dog as a kid was a boxer. We spent so much time together playing outside - he loved chomping at the sprinkler and playing in water. Even when he was older and we'd be jumping off the balcony he'd do the jump as well. Miss him.

My sister got a boxer now with her kids and man - he's super hyper. They need to get another dog to keep him company.

There's a place at the Waterfront with rescues hanging around there waiting for owners. Those dogs are so damn cute - everyone wakling past stops to pet them. Times like that I wish I had a garden.

Low maintenance coats, and excellent guard dogs. Need to be socialised well, otherwise will snap at strangers / kid's friends.
 
Will the dog be an indoor or outdoor dog? If indoor, do you think you could keep it sleeping on the floor, or will you eventually succumb and let them sleep in the beds and be on the couches? If its gonna be a bed/couch dog, be careful with dachshunds, their backs could be problematic. Also if your house has stairs.

Maybe check out beagles, scottish terriers, jack russels, boxer... Golden labs are also amazing family doggos.
 
Boston Terriers or French Bullies are great with kids, but they aren't really hypoallergenic, though in reality, no dog really is.
Daschunds are great dogs but they can be snappy and grumpy.
Jack Russels are hyperactive and if from a pup can be good with kids, otherwise nope when get set in their ways.
Beagles, generally good with kids as well.
Over the years I've had a variety of dogs and my old Bostie was the best with my son. Though the various mixes we have now is also good, but he's much older now.
 
Miniature Schnauzer. They are without a doubt the best breed for children. They are playful, gentle, loving and love to play with kids. You can’t go wrong with a miniature Schnauzer

Short hair Dachshund. Super smart, they don't really shed much hair, if they are brought up around kids they're the best companion thanks to their size.

Yeah I get that no dog doesn't shed, but some are more manageable than others.

Wife's sister had a Jack Russell and the hair went everywhere - worse, it didn't just go everywhere, it attached itself to everything and was impossible to remove. They're like small needles...

Poodles and Maltese don't really molt like that, but a lot of dogs do and the hair is a side effect. Especially short haired breeds who do tend to be better with kids though poodles are good with kids, poodles not maltese
 
don't know much about dogs myself, but +1 for the rescue dog, Dogs cant talk and they shouldn't be made to pay for Human negligence, were evil and violent to each other enough, Dogs should be made to pay for it as well,

smallish breed that does well indoors, not sure if Chihuahuas are a bet?
