He mostly just watches sport on a stardard dstv decoder hey, a movie now and then and alot of news and travel channel.
What's he (dad) got at the moment?
I'm gonna make a little assumption.I think he's currently got a large CRT TV (±72cm) and he uses it to watch SD TV, sport, DVDs, maybe some movie rips.
...32" entry LCD will be a downgrade.But does allow for HD PVR, HD media, etc.
The only replacement for CRT for SD/TV/sport/DVDs/etc. is plasma (42" HD Ready).

Not an option unfortunately.
Anyway a 32" screen most probably won't fit in there unfortunately. I recall doing some measurements for them and even brought over the 32" LG from my bedroom to their place to see if it would fit, and it was off by a few mm. Eventually they decided to just flog off the unit and get a new one along with a bigger screen.
It's best to measure the exact dimensions, and take a measuring tape along with you to the store.

If your dad gets an HD TV, and if he already has DSTV, I would strongly suggest a HD PVR as well - that way he can watch sport in HD and proper widescreen, without stretching the normal 4:3 Supersport to fill the widescreen TV.

Ok since they were out of stock of the one on special at Game, me and my dad have decided to get a 42" HD Ready Plasma and get a new low lying wall unit for the Tv to sit on, this however will be done next month.

Maybe in the past. Much smaller difference nowadays between plasma and LCD.
Like LCD, at OP's budget, LED back-lit LCD (100% the same tech as LCD) would too be a downgrade from CRT for his dad...

Plasma = 400 Watt per hour, while LED = 129 Watt.
If we were living in the UK, I would not mind at all, but we live in a country where we use terms like load-shedding.
