So I'm keen to get my father a new TV, now I haven't really shopped around but I did have a look at these two screens:

1. Samsung LA32C530

2. Sony KDL32EX400

Now he likes Sony screens for some reason but I was told by the dealer that Samsungs have a slightly better picture especially from an angel, also I have a problem... the wall unit my father has measures at 80cm across which is a problem if you check the width specs on the above two LCD's. So um suggestions? any alternative screen I can get? max budget R4500.

Any help would be appreciated :)

EDIT:

This one here seems pretty good imo, pitty it's only got a 1 year warranty :(

I didn't even know angels had time to watch TV.. :D

Different models from the same manufacturer will look different, depending on the technology used etc, so it's completely inaccurate to say Samsung TV's will necessarily be of a better quality than a Sony. But anyways, if the wall unit is only 800mm across, you have a problem, since these (32") are generally the smallest proper HDTV's you get. There are 26" ones but they only have a 1280x720 resolution as far as I know. The Sony might (just barely) fit but it looks like a bit of a gamble.

Game has a special atm on the Samsung LA32D550 for R3499. I believe it's better than both above TV's and cheaper. The bezel is also smaller on the new D series and might fit in the required space.

simplex radio has the following:
32ex400 - R3799 - has 2 tuners, analog and digital though its dvb-t
32cx520 - R3999 - has a newer colour engine?, internet features + media sharing via lan, also has analog and digital tuners

The guys at simplex said they will beat any price, im going to pickup a 32cx520 this weekend.

Edit: makro has a 32" samsung for R3499, not sure what model though.

Samsung's Africa site lists width at 804.7mm - LA32D550K7R.

You would do well to check the exact model number on the box before you buy, or better yet take a tape measure and use it on a demo unit.

What's he (dad) got at the moment?

I'm gonna make a little assumption. :D I think he's currently got a large CRT TV (±72cm) and he uses it to watch SD TV, sport, DVDs, maybe some movie rips.

...32" entry LCD will be a downgrade. :( But does allow for HD PVR, HD media, etc.

The only replacement for CRT for SD/TV/sport/DVDs/etc. is plasma (42" HD Ready).

I'm sure the first thing PP says every morning, as a ritual is say "Plasma is good for SD/TV/sport".

Lol :D
..and rightly so!!
Yeah but if you read the posts, the width of the available space in the unit is 800mm. So what it will be used for is irrelevant as the only option is 32" or less. And I'm not aware of any easily available Plasma in SA at that size.

There aren't any in SA, let alone the world, to my knowledge.

Point is, dads prefer plasma. ;) My post was not meant to deal with the size limitations, just making a point.

Why suffer with entry 32" LCD because of an old cabinet design. :D Jokes, of course I understand the limitations, but yeah... Poor dad. :D
