Hey guys,

I have access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which comes with quite the number of handy tools and services.

I want to start with creating my own E-Mail Server using my home internet connection, for experimentation and fun purposes. The GitHub pack does give a free .me domain and a free SSL Certificate (PossitiveSSL... not sure if that has any meaning). I am in the process of installing Ubuntu Server 14.04 on my spare laptop, which has 4GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor, a 320GB HDD.

I have the certificate but not the domain name... I would love a .co.za domain (or any other domain which is cheap :D ). So far, I am seeing EliteHost offers a co.za domain for R75 a year. Are there any other places that sell co.za domains or any other domains, at really cheap rates? Sorry for being a cheapskate... Student Budget :)

Also, it is my first time using Linux, so everything is looking so brand new to me :D

Thanks.

I see that is for the web hosting. I want the domain name... I want to try set everything up on my side for the experience.

I read that I can get this all started with the dynamic IP address if I use a DNS Service.

IIRC domains.co.za sell .me domains

EDIT: Far from free. But R350 odd pa isn't that expensive

Had a way of getting .com/.net domains for $0.5 a while ago, damn I miss that :(

The pack does come with a free .me domain, but they say now its only limited to students in UK and Australian Universities :( How did you claim your .me domain?

I didn't use my .me domain because I already have enough meme domains, maybe spoof your location when registering, I do it all the time to get region locked domains.

If you don't have a static IP address, associating your domain with your home connection is going to be quite interesting.

Also, many mail servers will not accept mail from you unless they can do a reverse DNS lookup on your mail server. Which will also be "interesting".

Dynamic DNS should work. For the reverse lookup issues there is a solution.

I hate this cheap skate whant everything for free mentality.
Can i register and pay for a domain and point the DNS records to you?
Its for free...
Just give me a name and ill register it quickly

R75 these days.

edit:

Misread that, it is R59 still.

Hmmm actually on the front page it says R59 per year and then if you go to the pricing page it says R70. I wonder what the actual price is.

Dns client on the linux box something like inadyn then port forward on the router I suppose in conjunction with afriad.org since dynDNS isn't free anymore.

The guy is a student. And you hate that he is looking for the cheapest price? What is wrong with you? Do you remember what it's like being a student?

Pricing went up a while ago, so the actual pricing should be R70. Domains.co.za charges R75 these days.
