Pricing went up a while ago, so the actual pricing should be R70. Domains.co.za charges R75 these days.

Thanks, I completely missed it. :)

OP check pm I got a domain that you can have

I hate this cheap skate whant everything for free mentality.
Can i register and pay for a domain and point the DNS records to you?
Its for free...
Just give me a name and ill register it quickly

Dude, go have some coffee before opening myBB shesh...

Have you ever been on a student budget?
Yes...but we didn't have the .me tld, I used serv for cPanel hosting and my parent's were kind enough to see it s education costs

All in all to host and register a domain for a year cost about R400.

If shared, then 9 buks per month from Afrihost. Free domain for the first year.

But if I understand correctly he wants to use his own pc as a Web server so he just needs the domain.

75 buks at domains.co.za and a FreeDNS.afraid.org account.

R317 per year at Hetzner
Domain name R89 a year
Hosting R19 per month

Oh local hosting. What's the point of local hosting though, unless you host latency dependent applications on the server?

International you can get a cheap VPS from http://www.ramnode.com/ or dedi https://www.scaleway.com/

Far more control and more to fiddle, learn with as a student.
Personally have the scaleway dedi and use it for Seedbox, Email, Filesharing, Hosting memes and VPN.

Digitalocean

That and that pack come with free credit for them.

Running your own mail server is like running next to your own car while it free's downhill to save on petrol. Too much effort.

Way cheaper to just let someone take care of it for you. As for the setup, you'd need a static IP address at home if you want your mail server on your home network. You won't need hosting anywhere other than the registrar for the domain, and you can use free DNS services to do what you need to do.

It's expensive running a mail server (a proper one not used for spam at least). So maybe just setup one on your local network for local emails and don't expect the outside world to deliver to your mail server to gain the experience in setting one up. However, you will quickly fall short of gaining the experience of being spammed and blocking viruses from other clients using the mail server etc.

Setting this **** up isn't cheap, so maybe save your R2 a month allowance mom and dad gives you and get your domain when you can afford to (or get a job, 1 night of waitering netted me R500 in tips and I could do whatever with it)

I know that it would be a lot easier to pay for someting that is already setup... But I want to give this a try and see how it goes...

I was going to get the static IP address - I called Axxess and they told me the Netgear DGN2200Mv2 TELKOM router does not support L2TP. So I will have to use some DNS service.

Might look into http://freedns.afraid.org/

I have the same issue with not having a static IP, and that did the trick
