Getting an SSD?

mmmmm... Wouldn't mind getting a 120gb... But which brand and what write speeds? And is it just a case of plugging it into one's existing rig? Are there potential compatibility issues? The short answer?

1. OCZ or Intel - there are many others, aData, Samsung, etc. but it all depends on the speed you want and the price you're willing to pay ;)
2. Yes, plug and play
3. Shouldn't be any compatibility issues
4. See first 3 above... :p

The cheapest I can find is from the UK, at around R2245 - may take a while to hit the R1k mark...

I have a supertalent 128GB. Its a couple of years old now, bought it quite a while back.

still serving me well, only have one gripe.

its not big enough! :) when you used to copy on a SSD then when you work with your normal drives they seem so slooooooow :)

I keep only the game Im currently playing installed, but still bigger would be nice!

I reckon I got R1.5k max to drop on a 120gb SSD but want 500+mb write speeds... I wait patiently...

Depends what you need it for, it's a nice to have, things happen much quicker with solid state but they have a shorter lifespan. There are also two different types of SSD you can get, one is even faster with an even shorter lifespan while the other a bit slower and lasts longer, obviously the faster the more expensive, do some reading on he differences.

If you were to get a SSD it would make more sense to use it for your OS and not as a secondary drive, that basically defeats the point of it.

In my opinion SSD are nice to have but are super expensive compared to HDD of the same size, if you got the cash rock on.

Well for me it's not for office work.. Just for gaming and just general use..

But yes, I am planning on having the OS on the SSD (Yes again, obviously :P)

Just a bit worried about the shorter life span :( wonder how that going to work out.. sigh..

THanks anyway

I have a ADATA 64GB SSD and only 55GB can be used and this is evident with all SSD I dont know why. They are cool is you want windows to boot instantly. But remember if your drive crashes which can happen, you can't recover anything!!! I like it because reboots are quick and painless and that stuff loads in a breeze. Chrome opens as fast as an explorer window which is almost instantly. Searchs are very quick. But only problem I have to redirect data to other drives all the dam time and this is frustrating!!! So it has pros and cons. PS dont buy a hybrid drive its a rubbish concept.

WHy is it that you can't recover anything? Guess it's just the pro and cons lol..

But is a 64GB SSD enough?

Cause I think OS us up like about 20GB rights?

So that means you only have like 35GB to work with.. O.o enough?

I installed a Kingston SSD 128Gig in my pc... windows installed on it.. so boots in 12 second to ready to use desktop. Windows 7. Paid R2030 for it.. then what ever other programs you want to load fast you can install on it. Even with the limited life span..you should get your 3years atleast. I was very sceptical about buying it...but its totally awesome the fast loads etc... remember it wond increase fps in games..only affects load times...dramatically.

Sent from my HTC Vision using MyBroadband Android App

Awesome!! 12sec.. my windows boots up (To being able to use) takes like 30-45secs.. (But not really complaining about the speed of it boots, just that after the log on screen.. TONS of programs needs to start.. which then slows down my PC :( )

Is a 128GB SSD enough? At leeast 3 years? And then after that it's a gamble?

R2030.. price should have somewhat gone down .. right?

Echoing what the others are saying. If you can afford an SSD for your boot/OS drive, go for it. Makes a huge difference.
I've got a Samsung 128GB, and my Win7 64 OS installation is approx. 72GB (incl all sorts of rubbish, programs and data) - when cleaned up with only the everyday programs I use, look at around 35GB-50GB, so a 64-128GB SSD should be perfect.

I don't know about the lifespans on these drives - mine's been powered on 24/7 since installing on 21/11/2008 (nearly 3 years), and no issues to date...still as fast as it was when new ;)

Was thinking of an 128... cause 63 just sounds too small.. just incase something extra needs to be installed.. then it's like no space.. =.="

I see.. mm.. well they say it has a life span of AT LEAST 3 years.. mm.. that still worries me.. so much money.. for only 3 years? :(

If you're mainly using the PC for gaming/watching videos/surfing the Internet, then getting a SSD is simply a luxury.
The SSD won't improve your gaming experience, except for the map/game loading times. If you already have a decent graphics card, CPU and loads of RAM, then you can most definitely start looking at SSD's.

If you're using your PC for your work, where time is of the essence, then I'd highly recommend a SSD, with a 64GB one being the bare minimum.

Yeah exactly what you said.. I don't really do any work, beside just normal word and things.. so am not really suffering from speed or anything. Well I think I have a decent GPU and Ram.. CPU I guess it's ok..

So that's why i'm starting to look at SSD.. and after that, i want to check out computer cases.. though don't knwo if it's going to help with anytihng :P

Yeah.. Like i was saying above.. anything below 64GB is already too much.. so am looking at the 128GB.. hopefully price WILL drop :)

If he has a motherboard that's got SATA6 ports.

Tell us a bit more about your pc, specs wise?

I think my Mobo does..

I3 530
4GB DDR 3 1333
Mobo: Giga H55M USB 3
GTX 460
7TB

So I think my mobo has the Sata 3.. not 6.. O.o

An SSD is probably the most benefitting piece of hardware you can get if you already have everything else. If you are happy with your current rig, then by all means, look at getting an SSD drive. I can tell you that I will never use a mechanical drive ever again for my OS drives. Right now I have the OCZ Vertex 3 240gb and I am dual booting Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11, its incredibly fast. It speeds up your pc like you cannot believe. Multi tasking is so much easier, programs/apps load instantly, games also load very fast. You cannot go wrong with an SSD. I agree that an SSD is luxury and not a must-have but it certainly will make your machine more responsive.

And yes, there is always a possibility that an SSD will fail, but come on now, every hard drive can crash and burn. If it's faulty, you send it back and get a replacement. That is also why you must only load your OS's on it and store all your valuable data on a separate drive.

If you are happy with your current rig and dont want to buy a new one, then I suggest saving up and getting an SSD. You will not look back, I promise.

Yip YIp~ am happy with my current stats

true true.. all hardware will have problems..

basically just have to get a company that is willing to warrentee it for a long time :)

Thanks~

Um... since OCZ is first.. that means it's the better one?
