So after what felt like the longest nine months ever, my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

Now, we've prepared ourselves for the long nights and little sleep, but I also want to try and get the little one in a routine as quickly as possible.

Any tips, tricks, or cheats will be very (very) much appreciated.

Congrats.

And no way of telling. Each baby is different.

Friends of ours' baby slept through after only 3 months but our 2yo daughter only started sleeping completely through in the past 3 months now.

And yes. Stick to routine like a religious nut. We find if we break the routine she is up 2 or three times per night.

We used the sleep sense books as a guide. Baby has slept through since 3 months or so.
And yes, routine is key. We don't miss bath time ever

At this point it sleeps about 3 hours, wakes up, nappy change, feed, repeat. And then the random crying, of course.

Edit: should probably stop referring to my son as "it"...

5 years.

Then you will sleep oke for about 9, then you will start hearing how it sneaks out.

Or if you are in PTA a groen mamba from your pharmacist and a Prozac for the wifey...

His stomach is very small and digests milk quickly, especially breast milk. So don't be in a hurry, it takes a while before he can take in enough to be able to sleep through. Good luck

Don't ever rock baby to sleep, then you screwed because wants it is used to been in the hands or rocking off to sleep, good luck

Lazyness worked for us (or maybe genetics). Both our babies, one 10 years old now and the other 11months old, realised very quickly, that crying for nothing won't bare fruit in this household. I'm not saying we let them cry on ends, we just didn't jump up on every little noise they make. Especially during the night, while sleeping.
They were sleeping through (9pm to 8am) from the beginning.
But liked said before, different gimmicks for each and everyone of them babies.

We've heard that too, often. It's heartbreaking to hear him cry, but we're already figuring out which are "real" cries and which ones aren't.

23 hour naps... Seems a bit excessive ;)

How old is baby now? Don't let people confuse you too much, just trust your instincts.

There is no magic formula. What worked for others won't necessarily work for you and vice versa.

First define your idea of "sleeping through" because seems people are confused about this.

Secondly, for the first three months its never going to happen, especially not if breastfeeding.

After that you might start getting 6 hours in a single stretch which in my opinion qualifies as sleeping through.

If you were expecting 8 hours adjust your ideas now as it won't happen not with any frequency at least.

Week 6 will be the worst. If you have leave to take that's when you want to take it. 6-8 weeks is safe.

Congratulations by the way. Most of what you've heard is bull**** from drama queens. It's not that hard and you'll adapt to it without much issue and wonder what the fuss was all about from other people who make it sound like hard work.

Just take it in your stride and deal with it day by day.

If you are getting four hours now that's pretty decent and I honestly wouldn't focus too much on forcing for more than that.
