Getting Closer

I sincerely hope that Telkom are the ones in dreamland here!

Though it anticipates an innovative offering from the new operator in order to differentiate itself, Telkom doesn't believe Neotel will be able to compete with it on price.

For people who doubt Neotel’s ability to compete with Telkom on rands and cents, Angus Hay, Neotel’s Executive Head of Strategy, pointed out that the company has already taken some business away from Telkom in the cutthroat arena of international voice and IP transit.

According to Hay, it basically comes down to pricing in this arena, and Neotel’s ability to take Telkom on in this field sends a clear message about their willingness to win business through competitive pricing.

So far, Telkom says it has seen "very little" of Neotel in the marketplace since the launch of its wholesale international services. However, it concedes to having lost one or two competitive bids on a price-specific basis - though not on an outsourced solution basis, says Beelders.

I'm really interested in what the second half of this year will bring us...

things definitely look like they're heating up.!

Really, if Telkom believes Closer is value for money, they are hopeless.
What is it with Telkom trying to market all their overpriced services s "value for money"? Sure, countries like China have cheaper telecoms costs, but claiming it's because of a "massive economy" is plain idiotic.
Exactly how massive does South Africa's economy need to grow before your garnish R10 off your prices, Telkom? SA is the biggest economy on the continent, yet some smaller economies in other countries, offer cheaper telecoms than you do??

I recon 2007 will be a good year for us here on MyADSL.

Closer 1 is a rip off, yet closer 2 is far better value for money.

Personally I would pay anything at this stage just to have a damned telephone line. I don't even care who provides it. I have now been waiting 10 months and 17 days for installation from telkom. 6 March I can have my 1 year anniversary of non-delivery!

Beelders - what a ***king idiot

Beelders is revelling in the success of Telkom's range of Closer packages -- puke aaarrhh puke...

I wonder why - maybe lets rip off the public for years with HIGH pricing - then come in (just before competition kicks in) with Rip-OFF packages to make the public think they getting cheaper prices.

It's no wonder these Closer packages are proving popular.

STOP Telkom from reselling your Closer minutes - use them every month ..pleez

And I'm hoping to have an ADSL line installed next month, I think I'm going to be waiting a looong time too...

what a useless comany. such a disgrace. it makes me sick to my stomach to see telkom's adds pretending to offer services to its consumers. they suck big time!

hopefully neotel delivers. even if just on service, it'll be enough reason for everyone to move over. having a proper customer service setup is key.\, as telkom's is non existent.

Why wait????

Beelders says Telkom has a number of other bundled offerings planned and will release those when needed in response to Neotel's offerings.

So much for being 'customer centric' !!!

with Rip-OFF packages to make the public think they getting cheaper prices.

R145 for all inclusive landline calls for evening and weekends is not that bad, and people are already saving, which is good and that includes line rental.

The R300 option is a bit steep though.

During normal Hours:

For a normal phone line, a local call is charged at 0,00634c/sec = 38c /minute minimum charge 59.4c.

Closer 1 charges 68c per minute with a minimum call charge of 68c.

Similar for Closer 2

Sorry I meant Closer 3 was a rip off and I am only really focused on Closer 2 for the free calls, where the call charges don't come into play.

Exactly. Just more of Telkom's smokes & mirrors illusions. Even if they did have China's economies of scale, they wouldn't pass any savings on to the consumer. We are being told the same with ADSL prices. When the number of ADSL users increases, prices will decrease. If you fall for these stories you will fall for anything. The only thing that will force Telkom to drop it's prices is competition or ICASA/DOC. As it was ICASA/DOC that allowed Telkom to overcharge so much in the first place, we have to put our faith in Neotel.

I see they mention DSL services on copper. How soon will this be available tho?

A nice article! Haven't heard from Telkom executives in what feels like ages, so kudos to Belinda. Usually get marketing fluff but Beelders gave real information here which gives some insight into what is happening behind the iron curtain :D.

BTW, not congratulating Telkom because they should be doing this all the time and not just when shareholders start to apply pressure.

An interesting choice of words "sell reality to customers" - I suppose we should all be very happy that Telkodemonopolies has now patented reality and is selling it at an unspecified exorbitant price - and there is a cost associated with having to wait indefinitely for an ADSL line - either an existing one to be fixed or a new one to be installed...
