Getting into cycling / mountain biking

Ended up going with Avalanche Reflex Pro 29 for R7800 from local bike shop.
Took it for test flight yesterday and it ok, will try it on the trails this weekend.
Protect you head and take care.

Need to pick up cycling even if just to motivate my 7 year old son to get on his bike. I have one very old makro one that I bought for R500 rand (15+ years ago I am sure) and that weighs a ton but still works fine. LOL.

Same also have a bike from 20yrs back, heavy but built strong, no shocks at that point in time.
Hanging up in garage on wall like a trophy marlin.
See Son that's what we used to ride....

So if the whole family takes up biking, four of us. Should I get a trailer bike rack or one of those that bolts to the towing hitch.

Old bikes are only painful if you’re into clocking up miles. That squeaky crank starts working on your last nerve when you’re exhausted.
For kicking around the neighbourhood they are perfectly fine with the added benefit that nobody wants to steal them while you pop into the shop.

We have the Thule 4 carrier, attaches to tow bar and is the most bang for buck.

I have only been able to ever fit max 3 bikes on there unless I remove the wheels.
Also not geared for Transkei dirt roads and the straps have snapped or worn so always use extra rope and tie down everything to bakkie roof.

Might then do the trailer option then. Want to take the bikes on holiday now and again and thinking about the trailer hitch might prevent me from taking a trailer with.

I used to find it perfectly ok to drive around the complex and a bit outside. That thing is really heavy though - nearly 70% as heavy as my wife's cycle. I don't know what they put in that cycle that made it so heavy - it will probably sell more at a scrapyard if it is iron. :)

Fellow peeps - Is this something good enough to start cycling with ? R1K price seems ok, even if it is old bike.

I have a very old makro bought bike but that is heavy AF. LOL.

Google lens search says "The image shows a silver GT Sensor 3.0 mountain bike, likely a model from around 2012"

Avalanche for R4499 seems decent.
All these prices make my eyes water but is Avalanche a decent brand? Apart from looking for myself, I am also looking for second hand 20 inch bike for my son and saw Avalanche DV8 bikes going for 1.4K but can't find out much information about this brand/bike.

Skip..

Price is too good to be true, even for an older bike like this..

Then, for starting out cycling, you really don't need to be jumping straight onto a dual suspension..

I would say hunt around for a Silverback, titan or apex.. decently specced for any beginner rider and maintenance is going to be far simpler and cheaper, because it's not a dual suspension..

Thanks, I was about to contact that guy for a deal but I didn't think of maintenance. I will have look at those brands you mentioned but my budget is just about R1.5K so I doubt if I will get any of those brands in that price. :) Basically, I want something I can service/maintain myself (in general - can't fix gears of course) so nothing fancy but nothing as heavy as my current makro bike either.

Sorry Meneer but R1500 isn't going to cut it. You are going to get more Makro rubbish and going to have to buy again when something breaks. Agree with @WAslayer

Yeah, so you have R 1.5k now.. stick to your current bike and save a bit more.. You need to be aiming for about R 5k which will then allow you to get something decent 2nd hand.. once you have about R 3.5k I would say start looking for a bike as you may score a good deal or be able to negotiate a deal with someone motivated to sell..
