is it that the people with costliest bike win the races or it is just a good old dik swinging contest between joneses ?

3 of my second hand cars (85 + 35 + 15) cost me R135K in total. WTAF R239K

The costliest stuff is where you will find the lightest components, components made with expensive carbon, titanium and what not materials.. There are also R&D costs for those components factored in as well manufacturing complexity..

Does this make a difference in winning races..? Absolutely, but not for the average Joe.. Professional bikers benefit from the advanced stuff you pay this much money for..

The average Joe rocking one of these, definitely showing off..
 
Also depends what you do on a bike. Of course there is a point of diminishing returns and then its about dick measuring (I'm looking at you people with the Orange Fox forks).

But if you want to do any sort of trail riding where there are drop offs or jumps you are looking at 30k plus for the absolute cheapest.

Or the Oros man shaped men on their R200k Specialized bicycles starting in the last batch of a seeded race. Not sure what they are swinging…
 
Eish - you guys totally misunderstood my cycling ambitions. Idea is just to amble on our suburban sidewalks and nothing else. I think R1.5K MTB should do for that purpose.

Okay, you don't want to amble on your heavy AF makro bicycle.. for 1.5k that's what you will get these days..

If you continue shopping, you MAY, just maybe, get lucky to come across a 20 year old trek alpha variant or giant Yukon/boulder or Schwinn Mesa which they may let go for that money.. but then you may need to replace who knows what to get it running properly, assuming replacement parts are still available, as things have changed drastically in the last 20 years.. so that is more money you need to fork out..

So save a bit more and buy something more recent that might not even need a service, let alone replacement parts and that will last you until you are too old to amble the burbs any longer...

Years ago i did a casual mtb race with a mate. I had my hardtail and he wound up buying some Makro POS dualie..he was pretty stoked he had a dualie... We parted ways halfway in as his bike was already squeeking and creaking and was driving me nuts...

Anyway... After the race i asked him how it all went for him... He said it was the first bike he had ever ridden that required him to pedal going downhill..
He sold it to the gardner afterwards....

Gardeners are very clever these days. Our townhouse gardener has better bike than my Makro one. LOL.
 
Anything with a modern alloy frame with modern geometry should be good to last you a while.

Titan, Momsen, Merida, Giant, GT and Silverback are all brands I would consider in your case. Stay away from the Totems, Raleighs, Diamondbacks et al if you value your sanity.

Thanks for specific brand names. No wonder totems & raleighs are going for under 800. :)

Spotted Merida on FB for 1.7K but that is 20inch wheel size and should do fine for my son.

I picked up a Merida for myself a few weeks ago, very happy with it thus far. My previous ride was a Titan, also a perfectly serviceable bike for what your usecase would be.

You could look at 27.5”/650B sized ones as they are a lot less in demand than the 29” models, however that being said resale would be less than the 29ers if and when that time comes.

26” is old tech now, not really worth pursuing unless you get a really really good deal on one. And even then I wouldn’t suggest them as a first option
