Getting into open source

It's hard not to start with OpenOffice.org. Two weeks ago version 3.0 of this open source office suite was released and within one week more than three million copies were downloaded. What is also interesting is that almost 2.5 million of those were the Windows version.
Just shows you how many people dislike M$ Office...
OO3. hasn't really been released in all the Linux repositories- not available on Ubuntu yet via update. You have to download and install manually.

OO has been a very very big Linux thing and M$ realises it is a key factor to success. Let's see what difference it will make for them in the long-term.

I think Microsoft should include Office with your Windows Installation... The price you pay for the OS and Office is insanely high... Rather put the 2 together and sell it cheaper...

I personally downloaded Open Office the other day and Im using it atm...

Been using OO2 since I migrated to Linux and went on to OO3 beta when it came out. Using OO3 now. Loving every bit of OO.

I wish Gimp had a friendlier interface - I've tried it a couple of times, but alas Photoshop is far superior...

To me again it's exactly the opposite. Gimp's easier to use than PS. I get lost in that particular monstrosity...

OO3.

Or how many people are cheap ;)

Open Office is good and it is getting better but I bought Office 2007 a few months ago. Haven't looked back since :)

That said I installed Openoffice for my mom and sister on their computers. If all you need to do is edit the odd Spreadsheet and Document paying for Office is overkill. Microsoft really need to make it cheaper.

I agree, but even a nicer interface wont save Gimp from Adobe's Photoshop..Photoshop is just in a league of its own period.

I worked with Office 2007 for a year and I got lost in the tabs. I'm not saying the tabs is a bad idea, after a while some tasks becomes a lot easier to do. But I would have liked a menu driven interface as well.

The problem with open source operating systems is their lack of support when it comes ot running win32s binaries. Sure there is WINE, but what I would like is a free and open source windows. This is where ReactOS comes into play, pity it is still pre alpha in v0.3 but when it gets into the final stages I am sure M$ are gonna have to rethink their strategy.

Read the article. It's about apps, not OSes.

Thats my point - open source needs to shift focus from making open source apps for proprietary OSes to making full on open source versions of those proprietary OSes they are aiming at with these apps.

It's called thinking outside of the box.

While I tend to agree with some OO apps, M$ Office 2007 is way ahead of even OO3.

IMHO, this article is far from complete. What about Apache, MySQL?
They have changed the way we look about the internet forever. Whilst at it, add the PHP language.

Ehwhatnow? Sorry, I don't completely understand what you mean (albeit that could have something to do with the time). Could you explain what exactly you mean a bit more, please?
