GETTING MY PLAYBOOK TODAY

I have a playbook and purchased it for around R5500.. The prices on that website are insane you must be drunk to pay those prices to be honest with you - they always take people as suckers once a product launches in the US they want to charge double. I wonder what their markup is on such playbook.
 
Like with everything in South Africa, the consumer gets RIPPED OFF !!!

The prices of Blackberry Playbooks overseas are as follows:

16GB > $499 = R 3300 > Sold in SA for around R7700
32GB > $599 = R 4014 > Sold in SA for around R8100
64GB > $699 = R 4684 > Sold in SA for around R10000

These SA prices are ALL double of what they should be and they place the Playbook WAY above even the most expensive IPAD.

Clearly these Playbooks entering South Africa are NOT official imports for the SA market and the retailers selling them are preying on the unsuspecting customer.

Better to wait for Vodacom and MTN to officially launch them at probably 40-50% less than what they are selling for now.
 
If you wanna bring your own PlayBook into the country its very simple to work the maths let's say entry Playbook $499 (R6.70) R3,353 add 10% markup total + 14 vat... That will give you the final price after paying customs.... That is excluding shipping another R500-700 depending who u go with

Your pretty hopeful with those figures, customs duty on electronics for private imports is 100% - 300%, anything with a 3" or greater screen lands closer to the 300% side plus the shipping, clearance fee (yes they charge you to charge you) then you add vat on and then you get yourself 1 effing expensive playbook.
 
If you do the paper work in advance u won't pay 100-300% - Remember when you purchase electronics at the retailer they add 20% markup.. U r bringing 1 Playbook not bringing over 10 or so.

I will see on tuesday what the final price is cause the carrier company will bring the EMS.

I know some guys that do order notebooks abroad... They have to pay 10% markup off the retail price they purchased and 14% vat but the party sending you the Playbook have to mention GIFT if they don't you screwed

Where the hell so you get your figures? I have been importing android tablets for a year now and haven't paid customs anywhere close to your guesstimates.

Only packages (of electronics) with a value under R500 are exempt from VAT and duties. You could always under declare but that is risky.
 
Dat's the break so buying stuff not realeased in SA yet...

And I've been trying to forego buying 1st gen products (iPhone 2G, Palm Pre, HTC G1), but there! are! new! gadgets! every! month!

So it is hard... But at least I'm budgeting for my gadget purschases now - used to buy when and where it came out... Now the phone/laptop and tab only gets upgraded once a year max & I have to sell the old one & only the yearly budget can be used to buy the new one or no sale...

I know there is no way to skip the system to pay VAT - vat = compulsory in this country and any other country...

I will know how much I am going to pay tomorrow
 
The Playbooks being sold in SA are not official products imported by RIM. They are special imports by retailers who get away with charging excessive amounts because the device isn't available in SA yet. When the Playbook is officially launched in SA you can be sure that the prices will be much less than the grey import models available now.

The screen on the playbook is brilliant. Been watching HD videos and looking at photos on it for 3 days and they're great. I'm having great fun with the Playbook so far. It's very slick and pretty, responsive, it's sturdy and solid and the power button isn't as bad as people say. I have no problem with it. I'm loving it so far.

That being said, I would rather wait a few months until all the software patches and updates have been done, or perhaps until the 3G model is released. Also, 16GB is a bit small - I have quite a bit of photos and videos and apps and am running out of space. Bridging to my Torch is quick and easy to set up, and connecting is almost instantaneous. The browsing is a touch laggy because of the Bluetooth delay (and Vodacom BIS sucking) but when I'm home I'm on my wifi and it's superfast.

I also love the touchscreen keyboard. I'd wait for the 32GB 3G model with the email functionality update before spending several thousand rands buying one.
