Last night Keno had some director from Gun Free South Africa on his show (702 or Cape Talk). I turned her off eventually because it really got ridiculous.

The jist of what was going on was that GFSA wanted to have a ban on the sale of toy guns.

So this person (Baselthwaite or something) is on the radio with absolutely no preparation done whatsoever. Is she so arrogant that she believes that people just hang on every word she says? Or is she just too stupid?

I am inclined to think the former rather than the latter.

Most people aren't stupid, it's just that they are paid to say stupid things.

I don't see why it has to be one or the other. Often the two go hand in hand.

So this person (Baselthwaite or something)

Judy Bassingthwaighte. National director of Grief For South Africa, last time I looked.

Namibian citizen, wouldn't guess it with a name like that.

Not too bright, famous for her "why can't we all just get along" approach to crime.

I am inclined to think the former rather than the latter.

I'll put money on the latter :-P

Yes, but not always.

In this case it really could have been a case of both because she was terrible. Her sole point was that guns are made soley to destroy. And then launched off about how children will grow up wanting to destroy. No stats or research to back up her arguement. No counters to any of the arguements raised by listeners calling in (who, for the bit that I listened, seemed to be moms wanting their kids to have a balanced upbringing).

It had to be the most embarassing discussion I've heard on air.

So I ask - was she so arrogant to just assume that she could wing a radio interview? Or just plain dumb.

I don't want to be personal, but what the heck? She sounded like she had had a few too many before coming on air. But it could be just the way she talks - and if so I apologise.

Excuse me for saying this, but she can't have been any worse than 3 talks Noleen, who has her own show! That is one dumb woman haha The guests always have to dumb things down for her and speak to her like she is an 8 year old. Its embarassing to watch that too. Mainly because Noleen just doesn't get it and she acts like the guests are speaking Spanish when she doesn't understand something profound that they have just said..

If you dont prepare for an interview, I would definitely say that its arrogance and ignorance.

So Aden Thomas on Cape Talk yesterday morning goes on about how toy guns are bad and "do we really want our kids running around going 'bang you're dead'".

So fellow #1 calls in, sez "Have you seen how kids play with toy cars? It's a miracle there's not more carnage on the roads. Don't you think we should ban toy cars?".

Fellow #2 says "Aden, you like Walker Texas Ranger and Steven Segal movies. Those movies glorify violence. What gives" Aden says "But it's about the children, we're not exposing the children to these movies".

Point is, these people have their minds made up. They're not going to let a few facts change that for them. Oh no.

Hehehe

If the anti-gun people had any facts at all, the pro-gun guys would have lost the fight long ago...

Both sides have valid arguments.... just none are willing to compromise.

Besides.. when was the last time you argued with a big dude with a gun against your head :D

Some countries do ban the sell of realistic - looking toy guns, I think there is a underlying wisdom in doing it. - can be (has been ) used in robberies...........

legal gun owners would not like to be confused with the fake ones too....

People seem to forget that heavily legislating guns doesn't take them away from the criminals, especially in our beloved country where you can rent guns by the hour from the Army and when policemen 'lose' their service weapons by the thousands.

Legislation is a very good start ....

countries outlaws gun ownership simply does not have gun violence , or very very little .......(per capita numbers)

in SA illegal possession of firearms must be eradicated...

They asked the previous GFSA chair, Maggie (?), an American woman, whether she had armed response at her house. Of course she refused to answer!!

With you Koos.

Let's deflect - it is easier to stop shops selling toys than it is to go and get the real menace off the streets.

Kids playing with toy guns is most certainly not the reason for crime. Banning them will just take the trade go underground like drugs which again is not a good option. Effective legislature and policing are the answers. Lets get rid of the illegal firearms first and foremost before considering stopping a toddler playing "cops and robbers".

FFS, these people from GFSA are insane. I dont like guns myself but their expectations are completely unrealistic. They need to get off cloud cuckoo land before they are likely to even warrant the time of the general South African public.

Bit stupid i'd say simply beacause

1) If youre a robber or whatever youre desperite

2) You WILL get a real gun, toy-gun, or even CARVE one out of wood and paint it black.

No one first asks to inspect the weapon before getting hold up or whatever

There is no 'magic bullet' solution to solve the extremely high crime rate , status quo.

colossal efforts from many different approach are required to make an impact in the crime wave. eliminate weapons from the society is a very good one.

Experts should do some international studies before opposing the ideas.
