I have a Globetrotter 3G+ Modem Interface PCMCIA Card with vodafone in Italy.
Internet HSDPA connections are great running up to 2Mb/s download.
My problem is using peer to peer programs such as emule through this connection.
The peer to peer program will occasionally download some stuff very slowly but more oftyen than not ....nothing. Other people appear only to be able to upload from the files I am currently downloading, even though I have lots of other stuff shared.
If I run 'Test Ports' within the program It tells me there is either a problem with my firewall or a 'port forwarding problem'.
The firewll I tried switching off, but to no avail.
I dont have a clue on port forwarding.......Please can anyone shed some light on this for me.

The easiest way to imagine Port Forwarding is a combination of routing by port combined with packet rewriting. A convention router examines the packet header and dispatches the packet on one of it's other interfaces, depending on the packet's destination address. Port Forwarding examines the packet header and forwards it on to another host (after a little header rewriting) depending on the destination port.
In more detail: Port forwarding forwards all packets intended for one forwarding port on the gateway from the external networks to routed on a specified port on one of the internal machines (after a little rewriting of headers). This is (in some ways) a reverse of masquerading and uses many of the maquerading functions - particularly the packet header rewriting code.

long story short, the server you are downloading from only allows a certain amount of information speed, dependent on how many individuals are currently making use of the site.
 
Thanks....however when I connect to the same server using landline rather than vodafone things download fine.
seems the problem is the vodafone router

"Hi,

This sounds like a problem with his machine, or software on his machine. However please be aware that he will have a private IP address which is natted when going out onto the internet. as such, the handset IP address will not be accessable to people on the internet."

I'm actualy using the same machine and software when I connect via my landline which works fine, therefore it definately appears to be a problem when using my vodafone connect card.

I don't really understand your explanation as I am not familiar with terms such as "Natted":

However, the main thing is......is there anything I can do to rectify this matter ....maybe to somehow make my IP address accessable to other people.

hi there

herewith is an explanation:


What happens is that we assign a private IP address that does not get routed on the internet, when the user requires a connection to get to the internet, a firewall performs the requested operation on your behalf using a public IP address. this only works for the outgoing connection, as the firewall knows the source address, and when the necessary data arrives back, it can map it back to the originating IP address.



The address assigned to the handset is private, and is not routed by any of the ISP's, and as such any packets destined for that IP will be discarded by the ISP's.


with regards to fixing your problem though i check with the engineers and they still maintain a software problem regardless of your ability to smooth sail with the landline, sorry mate :(
i went over and above data dudes head here, so i doubt he'll be able to help here...

I do hope an amicable solution does arise to your problem, in the meantime though- can anyone advise if there is a possible solution u reckon ive overlooked?:confused:

Good day,

We do not block any types of traffic. however P2P traffic is generally like that, if there are no peers with bandwidth available for the download, then you won't be able to download much. This will hapen on any network or ISP. This is not a fault with the network.

There is a NAT involved with the internet and mymtn APN's, whereby the unit is assigned a private IP address, and hen going onto the internet is natted to a public IP address. Thus, no connections from the internet towards the unit are possible, unless they have been initiated by the unit.

I have been following the threads here with regards to HSDPA as this service is fairly new in my country , the Philippines.

Im with Globe Telecoms (only carrier locally with HSDPA) and have experienced your problems too. Im not using emule but use a similar file sharing program, Azureus.

You can alleviate this problem somewhat when downloading torrent by following this link: Tweaking Bit Torrent Speeds By opening my ports to 100 (10 is the default for Winxp sp2) using the TCP/IP patcher, download speeds increased tremendously. My highest was around 200 kbps when before it was very slow. But then again, you need to have fast seeders. If those who seed have slow connections, then your download will crawl no matter how fast you are.

Im using a Huawei E620. I was supposed to get the globetrotter but up to know, the ordered units by my telecom hasn't arrived.

A bit Torrent does work but like pear to pear using up a lot of capacity on our network

More info....

Have noticed that when using emule, other people can only upload items that I am currently downloading. ie all files in my shared directory do not appear to be available/ accessible to other people.
Sorry, but I can only explain what I experience using the user interface software as I am not familiar with the technology such as NAT or port forwarding....yet. But I'm slowly learning!
