Mates using Windows Live Mail client (the application, not the web interface) with gmail (IMAP) but cannot send mail. He's using a Huawei E220 on Vodacom.

Does he need to change his smtp server details when on Vodacom?

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS3 or SSL: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication) Use Authentication: Yes Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

does windows live mail allow for this?

He needs to use smtp.vodamail.co.za with authentication

Must be the EMAIL's in/outgoing mail with Authentication set up. That way he will not need to change the outgoing mail.

The one draw back of that is that the mails could take slightly longer to send. They will be sent when you see it sent. only diff is that they will hang in limbo in cyberspace for a bit while being moved along.

in this case it would be gmail in / gmail out.

I have found that on a normal PC it seems to work better if setup as a pop account rather than IMAP. He aslo needs to make sure that his POP or IMAP is activated in gmail..

edit last gmail i had written windows in error.

Ok, I will use the default gmail settings for IMAP on Windows Live Mail client as per the gmail support site.

Second question, on his Blackberry what would those settings be, the same or smtp.vodamail.co.za?

Whatever is sent from his Blackberry he would also like to see it appear in his Windows Live Mail client.

Windows Live Mail is working just fine.

The blackberry however does not want to know anything about email, vodacom tech support was called a few times but they also don't seem to have a clue and eventually blaming it on the 'blackberry network'...

By default Blackberry tries to configure the mail account with IMAP 1st. So his Blackberry and Windows Live Mail will be synced like that if both is setup to use IMAP.
