no, they've been moving in this direction for a long time. Yes, it has to do with the hacking, but they have been making noose about it for a while now.

In fact I posted a thread to that extent some time back... in 2008.

GMail via HTTPS has been available for some time, though it required the user to manually change the account settings to HTTPS.

Now it appears as though it will be the default.

NB: It is slower. Also, if you have your Google page set up with gadgets (e.g. www.google.com/ig) the GMail gadget gets its knickers in a twist every so often.

Never realised there was a https option in the settings, just changed mine now.

Been using the https since the option was made available the year before last. I also did the same for all the email accounts on our Google Apps domain. I'm not complaining about speed.
