GNOME and Unity desktop alternatives

Dunno WTF is going on with KDE. I tried it with the current stable Ubuntu release and Fedora, utterly slow. On a Q6600, 6GB ram, Radeon 5870 it was at least 10x slower than Vista. Turning off all the bling helps but still sloooow.

XFCE is, as far as I'm concerned, the only worth while Desktop Environment out of this list, but still has a long way to go until it is ready for Joe Average, but it's one of my faves.

But as I don't use any GUI's on my Linux boxen, it's not a concern for me. CLI FTW.
 
Does XFCE have bling like KDE and Gnome have (Compiz and such?)

I like bling and widgets and compiz and emerald and that kinda stuff. XFCE got it all? Ill happily swap for a blingier desktop.

Well, if you want Easy Bling, then use KDE :) I just found it overly slow, but maybe the later versions are faster.

Then again, the only reason I used Compiz was for some specific features it offered, the magnifier is handy with some apps / websites and I liked the Expose desktop thing to 'preview' 6 desktops of running apps. But in all honesty I prefer sleek, fast and minimal with lots of hotkeys and functionality :)
 
Don't forget that the new Ubuntu is released today, with the Unity desktop shell, downloading the ISO now to give it a spin.. I see many Ubuntu users throwing tantrums already :D

I dont like the new KDE... I liked the old one back in the day but not the new one. I use a pimped version of Gnome. The pc is a gaming machine so I dont worry about speed issues. Still got lots of hotkeys and functionality but with spinning desktops (this is a pretty functional feature for a gamer :D )

Yeah, KDE 4x stinks. If you're happy with Gnome then don't bother with XFCE unless you're wanting more speed. I've quit bothering with Linux as my desktop OS because there are music production, games and other needs only Windows can do.

iv heard a lot of talk about enlightenment. never tried it myself though.

I wasn't so impressed with kde. granted it was the 10.04 one I tried, which is now a year old, but there were just too many "papercuts" for my liking. simple things like it not saving your desktop configuration settings, so I would have to re-set my screen resolution each time I started etc.
