I don't get on my soapbox all that often, but, in case you don't know, they support this horrible piece of internet-breaking legislation the US is trying to pass:

http://support.godaddy.com/godaddy/go-daddys-position-on-sopa/

Most other internet-related companies are opposed to it, and for good reason. So if you're looking for a registrar, please keep looking.

I've had a hate-hate relationship with GoDaddy for a while now, and finally moved my domains to Gandi.net this year. Reasons include:

  • They send me renewal notices for SSL certs, saying it requires action from me otherwise they will expire. I deliberately ignore it because I *want* it to expire (there's no way to cancel them), but the sleazy bastards still try to take payment from me (fortunately my credit card they have expired long ago).
  • Their treatment of first seclists.org and then nodaddy.com - see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/12/godaddy_shuts_down_nodaddy/ - you can see why they like SOPA
  • Treatment of their employees. Unfortunately most of that was documented on nodaddy.com, so I can't provide references, but their former employees had a class-action lawsuit against them. Yeah, it's that bad. For reference, the hosting co I work at doesn't ask for overtime except when volunteers are needed, for example on public holidays, and then pays handsomely for your time. No questions asked. That's how it should be.
  • That business with the CEO and the elephant.

It's a well-known fact GoDaddy is bad news. Always have been, always will be.

Maybe not a well known fact then, but that doesn't change anything, does it?

We are are in the process of removing all our domains from GoDaddy to Namecheap. GoDaddy is just too spammy for us and their corporate ethics suck.

Well I didnt know all that.
/takes note never to do business with Godaddy

It's pretty scary how many high profile domains are registered with this one scumbag of a registrar...

Haha. Ashton Kutcher is also moving his domains from godaddy because of this.
8 million + subscribers. Godaddy can't brush that off.

Watch this video this is scary:

Wikipedia for example.

Though if you're out to battle all companies who support SOPA its gonna be an uphill battle. Mastercard & Visa for example do too. As do most of the big entertainment companies...

Looks like Godaddy rescinded its support for SOPA :P

Source: http://www.osnews.com/story/25454/Facing_Boycott_GoDaddy_Rescinds_SOPA_Support

Facing this internet-wide boycott, GoDaddy could do nothing but rescind its support for SOPA. "Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation - but we can clearly do better," Warren Adelman, Go Daddy's CEO, said, "It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."

Yeah, I saw that. I don't imagine it's more than a PR damage-control stunt though. They helped draft that legislation - they're too deep in to pull out.

Just tweeted by @NameCheap

"We're very much against SOPA. If you'd like to move to Namecheap, use transfer coupon code BYEBYEGD today (expires 12/31)."

:D That rocks!
