going adsl for first time
my setup:

1x stationary desktop - to be connected via a normal network cable to the wireless router

1x latop - to be connected via either network cable or wireless

1x blackberry - to connect via wi-fi

1x android tablet device coming as well - to connect via wi-fi

1x cell c whoosh modem - this is the tricky part, if i ever cancel my adsl , (i.e. when cell c has sorted out the reception in my area), id like to use the router somehow to connect the desktop/laptop/bb/android from cell c connection

so it needs to be reliable, pref a big name brand, im gonna install it myself,
not the most expensive one please

any advice please?

thanks

Get a decent router : Billion 7402NX with 3G failover - because your ADSL will go down from time to time :)

Netgear DG834GU V5
I will never recommend any Netgear modems, especially the newer models. The old one, like this one that you suggested, is probably OK.

I'll go with the suggestions that Merenwenrago suggested. You might be able to get the ADSL modem cheaper from Uniterm Direct by buying off Bid-or-Buy, instead of directly from their website ;)
You really don't need 3G failover.

Pada, what do you find wrong with the newer Netgears? I've had a DG384G for +-4yrs and it's performed well. I run my ADSL connection with a desktop and server on the wire, and a netbook and smartphone on wifi.

Apart from the wifi limited to b/g there are no issues (the thing does run damn hot though). I've been tempted to replace the firmware with the OSS version, but never got there yet.

I had a dlink before, (rubbish), so when I come to upgrade / replace, what should I be looking out for?
Thx

Like I said: the old DG384xx modems are fine, but the newer ones are terrible for connecting at ADSL speeds higher than 512kbps + some of them doesn't have bridge mode.
You'll find quite a few negative things about the Netgear modems if you just search this forum.

The D-Link DSL-2500U is one of the modems that will give you some of the best SNR margins on a fast (4Mbps+) ADSL connection.
The ONLY thing that I have against the D-Link modems is that their firmware upgrade is terrible: no protecting against the flashing of an incorrect image!

@Pada:
Thanks mate, good to know, I am still stuck on a 386kbs line, so I have yet to experience netgear at better speeds.
The DLink I had before was a wireless only afair, for use with a WISP connection from GWI (now screamer: yes I know, lesson learnt!)
I won't hold that experience against DLink in general.

Billion are ovepriced compared to ones I showed and arent as good as my TP-Link

I had billions before and never performed as well as TP-Link or D-Links
