Going mobile with ease

sound promising, traveling with a heavy laptop tends wear down the old shoulder

My 4GB is eeePC is running XP Pro (XP Drivers included on CD) and is great for remote support / emails / surfing when away. Good battery life helps but it seems slow to recharge compared to my main Asus laptop.

was not impressed

I have one....the 2GB version is way to slow todo anything and takes forever to open applications and does not have a mail client (now sitting around collecting dust).
The 4GB version apparently is better but almost the same price as a standard laptop, and when you add XP to it, its a waste of money.

Coming in at a slightly higher price is the HP Mininote which grabbed my attention:

Some interesting reading, and from my experience rather accurate is this opinion:

Talk about behind the times ?! The next model is aleady out 900 with a 9" screen more ram and larger flash disk.

Just my opinion...

Agreed - the 900 has allot of the old issues resolved - good! ...but at ~R5000 I can also buy a standard entry level notebook with more capability.

If you want to go mobile and use if for email, the odd word processing and some internet functions, the EEEPC is a great idea (don't understand me wrong, the EEEPC it is a really sweet machine!) - but I do not think it will ever replace the everyday use of a notebook - well, not without some effort. I think this is just a cool gadget...

The stock standard version o/s makes one wonder how useful it really is.. i mean sure there is the possibility of running a few more apps(And if you a programmer the limit is endless.. but then the same is possible for cell :-/ tho more restrictive) compared to perhaps a top end cell phone which price wise would be a good approximation.

Then u need to look at functionality phone vs this notebook.. and to be honest, besides screen size and keyboard(tho this is obtainable for cell too) you have to question if it isn't better getting a top end cell and then using web software for certain things.. when needed. After all for mobility, cell's are becoming more usefull and powerful.

ofcause the usb, ability to run xp/notebook apps helps.

A top end cell phone is around R9000 enter the Nokia E90 while you may get a lot of funtion on it it is not fun to edit a document on.

well with a web browser you can get to google docs.. and i believe nokia's have a cut & paste functionality..

These are great. I would definitely buy the 9" screen version when it's released.

I need something smaller than my notebook. My Dell is great, but it's just too big to do some late night websurfing in bed.
