So I have without a doubt found the girl I want to marry. Ive decided that in December im going to pop the question.

After doing some research I have found the ring design I want to get for her and will be meeting with someone tomorrow to discuss getting it made. One thing im a bit worried about is the fact that she doesn't wear rings, so I dont have anyway of knowing her size. I know rings can get resized slightly, but id like to get it as close as possible. A friend suggested slipping some fishing line or something similar over her finger while she's sleeping to get an idea. Im not so sure about that idea  Anyone got any ideas? Or is the exact size of the ring not really that important?

And yes, ive considered the fact that it's risky going out and getting a ring for her without knowing whether or not she'll like it. But I really want this all to be a complete surprise. Besides, im pretty sure she's going to love the design ive got in mind.

My next question is, im trying to find somewhere romantic to go for a couple days in December to do this. I live in JHB by the way. Ive been looking at the Drakensberg so far and have a couple places in mind. I dont mind if it's a self catering place because we usually enjoy cooking together and being left alone. But that's not a must. It would be nice if it was a place with a view, montains, that sort of thing.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Chicks get fat, so a slightly bigger ring won't matter, you can always make it smaller. its if it's too small that it gets tricky making bigger. discuss this with the ring maker, they'll give you suggestions.

For me it was a simple procedure to just compare my fingers with hers. My pinky was the size of her ring finger.

No I didn't pop the question because she turned out to be a bitch, but yea... good luck

Drakensberg is definately an awesome place, go hiking/do a pica-nic and then pop her or the question

Dude on the ring side of things, you should maybe look at buying a cheap 200 buck ring and using that for your proposal and then telling her she can design the ring and get it fitted.

I know my fiancee preffered that method as she got to choose her ring and was not stuck with one i chose. Not that it would matter but maybe try get someone to ask her without letting her know or something.

what about one of her friends? They would be able to tell you the size. Even if she doesnt reaaly where rings im sure she has tried some of her friends' rings on to see how it would look.

i dont particularly like wearing rings but i always try my friends rings on.

no - don't tell her friends - they will tell her and ruin it all!

The most romantic place in the Berg is without a doubt Sycamore Avenue - it has treehouses with jacuzzi's etc

i dont think the friends will tell.

but if your not willing to take the chance why not ask the guy whose designing and making the ring for you? he has to start making the ring from something, so he should have some of those bendy type of rings. borrow one from him and then try it on her when she is sleeping(thats if she's a deep sleeper)

but if she wakes up it's gonna be a crappy situation, and might blow it all... id go for the compare your finger with her finger technique....

You should try and get yourself a good therapist in Dxb.

You carry a lot of anger toward women. I worry for you.

I worry for the next male to fall victim to one of his ex vixens

sounds like fun, throw in some champagne (or cocktails) and maybe a hubbley if thats your thing and have fun.....

Thanks for the replies (even from the single guy women haters ;) )

The sycamore avenue place looks interesting ill look into that. Any other places anyone can recommend? We have been to http://www.ikhayalamafu.com/ before which had a very romantic vibe to it. Anything similar?

Ill ask the ring maker person tomorrow if they have a bendy ring I could use on her. Ive never heard of one of those but ill ask. She is quite a deep sleeper but there is still obviously quite a risk of her waking up. hmmm

I know they have these "try-on" rings for sure, not too sure if their bendy at all though.

Before you try on the ring on her finger maybe you should get her a lil drunk to just ensure that sleeps very deep!!:o i know it sounds bad....

Why does this sound so familiar? ...

Hahaha! You could also ask her if the cloth smells like Chloroform or maybe feed her some Rohypnol? Ask DJK or Mephisto_Helix. I'm sure either of those two will be able to offer you some advice.

:D

Just take one of her existing rings and get it sized. She'll think she misplaced it. Then it will suddenly re-appear and she'll go 'oh well' shrug and move on ....

I proposed with a plain wedding band and gave my wife some diamonds I had lying around (that's how I roll) to be set in the way she wanted them.

A mate bought the ring and stones and had a temporary setting done - a very simple claw setting that shows off the stones but is easy for a jeweler to take apart and make a new ring from. The jeweler didn't even charge for the temp setting. His chosen one was then able to have them set how she wanted.

I reckon that before you ask you should be sure of the answer though. It might be a awkward drive home otherwise.

Lucky for me, my wife hates rings, so she designed her own "wedding ring" tattoo on her ring finger
