Fully agree. Some people cannot tell the difference in the drive between cars and/or discern the difference in the interior materials. Which is completely ok, if they just want that Korean car that goes from a to b, or has that gadget that makes them happy, but it's definitely not the same as a VW.

I had to drive a Toyota (comfortable, reliable, etc) rental last week on a business trip, and I realised again why I personally don't like the drive (it was tiring) of the brand compared to a VW.

I used to drive a Polo TDi and did the JHB to George stint quite a few times. Loved that car but the KM's got too high. So I traded it in and got an Elantra (with every damn feature except a sunroof :p ) and to be honest for day to day driving I much prefer it.

Drove the Elantra to George and back to JHB over the holidays and besides doing great time I never felt tired or had trouble overtaking cars at...120 :whistle:

Having said that the VW did feel more precise and glued to the road. So if you take driving seriously (...and do the robot to robot thing) you'll definitely rather want to stick with ze Germans. I find the interior of my car way better and more exciting than the VW though - not sure about quality.


PS: I've had to drive a Polo Vivo and Hyundai Getz before as courtesy cars and :sick:

Driving is serious business. :p Personally I prefer "glued to the road", but nothing wrong with being comfortable. And an exciting interior is ok I guess, but again I prefer the more sombre, ergonomic VW interior.

Staying on topic, I still need to go test the Golf 7 GTI. Enjoyed driving the 5 and 6 a couple of times and I can understand why they're so popular.

Do so, and ask for the auto, since that DSG is amazing fun. If possible I'd really recommend doing the track course as it really shows you much more of what the car can do.
 
I owned a new Golf 5 and now a Golf 6. The golf 6 is way way better. Test drove a G7 last year and IMO the G6 drives better.

I also have a G6 and I've driven the G7 on more than one occasion and the G7 to me is a better drive

Small things amuse small minds. I'd get that weak bladder checked out too.

Compare Hyundai/Kia, segment for segment vs Toyota and if you are still pissing your self you need help. Toyota has lost the plot. Look at all of their recent cars... Aygo, Etios, Yaris, Corolla... Name one decent fact about Toyota over the last 10 years besides the GT86?

VW is not so perfect either. VWSA selling old engines in our local Polo and charge the earth with everything as an option. A 1.6 Polo with Service plan is close to R230k :sick: And thats with NO options. What exactly are you getting that the Rio doesn't provide?

All things considered, the Koreans are definitely up there with VW & Toyota in most categories and motoring journos agree. Now go change your underpants.

Anyway, back to GTI7...

Not sure about Kia, but I've driven a lot of Hyundai's, and they are definitely not drivers cars!

I drove the Accent recently in Durban, and the steering was fluffy at just 100kph. Felt like a toy. The i20 was no different. The i10 felt like an Atos. It is an Atos. All the bells and whistles can't provide you with a better drive.

I agree, VW are horrible for their pricing for what you get (and don't get), but they are solid vehicles.
 
Kia is much the same and I definitely will not call them drivers cars. The steering is super light and not a lot of feedback. It does make town driving a breeze though :)
I haven't driven the brand new Cerato but the reviews say its improved but again, not a drivers car. The new Toyotas I have driven are no better. The Polo is a bit better but again calling it a drivers car is a bit optimistic. If you want a drivers car at the low end of the market get a Fiesta or Focus.

I am not going to do the breakdown but compare price, spec, engine, warranty, service plan, soft touch materials etc in the B segment and you will see why the Rio is doing so well, even Car mag who is VW mad rated the Rio tops. Its very hard to say "which one is better" as they both are good in different areas. I am sure the guy who wants to take his small 1.4l hatch back to the race track (lol) will happily pay the extra 30k or whatever it is for the Polo. They are "Solid" cars too.

Anyway.. I do not want to derail this thread further. The G7 GTI is a beast and its and there is no Korean to match it ;)

I did say in my opinion. I test drove a brand new G7 last year in July. The ride was hard.

But I will probably buy one early next year, as soon as my G6 hits around 105k on the clock.

There are a few issues with the G7.(Apparently there are fixes for these already)
1. Actuator clip rattles
2. Higher end radios have reception problems.
3. The roof lining towards the back gets wet when it rains heavy.
4. Noise on rear suspension

My choices next year will be G7 or A class Merc.

3. Nonsense. It has to do with the rear window sprayer. And it's extremely rare.
4. Not all models. And is being looked into.

Weird, I've heard from just about everyone that the G7 is specifically better for it's comfort and that's why many people feel it's less sporty.

Are there different chassis/suspension specifications available locally?

Quite numerous issues for a brand new top of the range model.

Ah, reading this makes me think, I seem to have "1" and perhaps "2" (the radio has to tune back to the preset station from some unknown station as I switch it on)
I have not seen "3" and cannot comment on "4"
I sold my G6 on 40 000 with not a single problem, but it was a 2010 model, so the "G6 problems" must have been solved by then...
