Golf 7 GTi

Its quite a boring car. Bland. Dull. Too german. Too front wheel drive. Too "perfect." For a hot hatchback, it doesn't have anything that makes it stand out, besides its cleanness. Even the Mercedes A45 AMG (and lets be frank here, merc can be pretty boring if the previous A class was anything to go by) has miles more theatre about it. VAG products lack soul these days. They are like apple computers of the car world.

You clearly haven't driven one and are basing your opinion on perception.

Its a nice enough car, but the price is just too much.
It is so close to S3 and nearly new m135i territory that I dont understand anyone who buys a GTI.

I would either get the ST3 (which is still on special for 330k with sunroof brand new) or if i wanted that classy interior and auto box save up for an m135i or S3.

There is a huge difference. The Golf 7 has literally been redesigned from scratch. The Golf 6 was based on the Golf 5 chassis which was based on the Golf 4 chassis, so the Golf 6 is essentially based on a decade old platform.

The interior of the Golf 7 is also completely different, with new electronic features and electronic handbrake.

The last complete redesign VW did of the Golf besides the current Golf 7 was the Golf 3.

New ST is a lemon, everyone knows that even ford. Even though it's on special it's not doing very well.

I really expected the new GTi to do well. Maybe the hot hatch is just dying?

One more question.
It's just my opinion that the 7 isn't doing well, what do the stats say? (If anyone here know)

That depends what you want out of the car. I quite like the drive in the ST, sure, the looks arent great, but its not the worst.
I enjoy the engine noise in the cabin, i like the bit of torque steer, its a fun car to drive.
Most reviews of the ST are quite favorable as well.

If you are interested in an enjoyable drive, its not a bad bet, especially when it is that much cheaper.

However, I did hear the Megane RS is up for a refresh / facelift very soon. That would be decent, because the inside of it is bland.
 
Paying 400K and you get no maintenance plan is the biggest problem in my eyes
 
I'm waiting for a demo golf 7. Whattacar. Even in 6th gear you can put your foot down and the car takes off. Oooh it's nice :love:
 
BTW VW gave me a quote which says 5 year/90 000km service plan is standard on all golf 7 models.

I think it's less the perception than the pricing itself that's throwing people off. At 400k it is still the best specced hatch (except the ST3 but that is the budget hot hatch anyway), but at that price people are more likely to buy a small SUV or a bakkie as was stated earlier, or even something like a 3-series or A4 etc. If I had the money right now I'd go for the 1.4 DSG with an extra or two, though the GTI would be very nice to have I'll admit.

The largest reason for the high prices I think is the weak rand, as the Golfs are all imported directly from Germany, no local construction. Not to mention the lovely customs and VAT and and and that get's charged on imports.

Yes. Definitely yes, you'd be very aware of the differences within the first kilometer.

I've driven the 1.4TSI around Kayalami, and sat in a Golf 7 GTI at Kayalami for a few hot laps - very different to the Golf 6 we drove prior!

But agreed, at those those prices, I'd rather get a rear-wheel BMW.

Had a similar series of experiences myself. Drove the GTI6 for the safety course offered by the VW Driving academy, then returned for high performance when they got the GTI7's in, and I have to admit that there was a HUGE difference in both ability and comfort. Went around the track myself as well as experiencing hot laps afterwards, spent the whole track in 3rd and 4th gear, switching to 4th at around 120.

Also drove the 1.4 on a normal test drive, managed to ACCIDENTALLY hit 180 on the highway without realizing it at all, that's how well the car pulls and how comfortable it is.. Also no noticeable loss of control at those speeds, just thought to myself wow everyone is driving slowly today... *looks at speedo* :wtf:
 
Resale value of the golf range in particular the GTI is exceptional, in my humble opinion at least. Had both a 5 and 6 and got out of both them easily after two years with no deposit financed over 60mnths. Now my 320d is a whole different story, think im going to be stuck far longer. 400k is expensive but i think the whole package and rand for rand value is pretty good. VW may not be a premium brand but i have found them on par with quality if not better in some aspects when compared to the bmw.

The GTI was put on sale in July hence the massive spike there.

Sales have risen consistently since the introduction of the GTI 7 and I believe there is still a fairly long waiting list to get your hands on one.

Traditionally the GTI has made up between 25-50% of monthly Golf sales in SA

It seems to be doing fairly well and I see plenty of them on the road, there'd be one in my garage if I could afford it.

VW not a premium brand?

Yes, they sell cheap runabouts but the quality of their more expensive vehicles matches if not beats that of German rivals BMW and Merc and as you said when time comes to sell a VW you will get a far better price for it than most other vehicles.

I bought a 2006 Polo for R105 000 in 2009 and TRADED it in for R95 000 in 2012, R10 000 loss over 3 years and 60 000km, I'd take that any day.

VW is definitely leagues ahead in build quality when compared to Korean tin boxes.

Definitely, I find it k@k funny when someone says buy a Korean car they are just as good as a VW or Toyota. I've had to change pants a few times because of this from pissing myself by laughing so much.

When i say not a premium brand, i mean if we were to list VW, Audi, BMW and Merc and ask the general middle class population to list the premium brands from above i think we would find that VW would be left out. I do however agree with you, top quality product and resale on all my VW's, a tdi sportline polo and two GTI's were truly fantastic.

They have all the features which you have to pay for on a VW, but they are made of cheap plastic, and the you can't even compare the drive to VW.
