Good age to marry

I got married just over a month ago. I'm 22 and am very happy with my decision. My wife and I are financially stable, have been together for over 4 years.

I don't think there is a specific age you should do it, but do it when the relationship and your lifes are at the right point.

I agree with Celine's post. The right time for you to get married is when YOU are ready to. I don't think you can pin down a "right age" for everybody. When you're ready to get married you will know it. I don't think the age at which you get married has ANYTHING to do with the divorce rate.

I was 22 and my hubby was 24. Almost 4 years on and we're still doing great. Whenever I have a "I don't know who I am or what I want to do with my life" or a "I want to have more fun before life becomes serious" moment, he is right there with me and supports me and helps me through it. If I were single I would have to deal with those moments on my own. We face that uncertainty together, rather than alone. And lastly, if I spend the rest of my life confused about who I am, at the very least I will always know that I am his wife and that he loves me and I love him.

This is not why we got married, for the record. We got married because the time was right and we wanted to. We had been together for 3 years and had been certain about our future together since the day we started dating. We dated with the intent to get married. Most young folk these days have it all wrong. You don't date someone to get to know them. You FIRST get to know them, THEN if you're serious about them and want to take it further you start dating. Dating is not taken seriously anymore.

If you're asking questions like "what's a good age to get married" that just proves that you are still unsure about getting married. So don't. You sound like you're trying to find excuses to NOT get married now. You are asking others to tell you what to do.

When you're ready, you won't need others to vindicate your decision and tell you what you should do when. You will make those decisions for yourself and you will know that they are the right ones.

when YOU are ready.
Agreed. I would only add, "when you are both ready" (ie not just one of you).

Ask yourself (and your prospective spouse) what exactly you mean and understand by marriage. Discuss it in detail.

For me the only test is whether the parties can make a free, serious, solemn and irrevocable commitment to remain faithful and forsake all others until death. Can and do you and the other love so deeply and unchangeably that you can and want to make a permanent commitment. That's why it's so important to know what character is, so in getting to know yourself and your prospective spouse, you can make a sound evaluation. Of course we cannot see into someone else's soul, so it always involves an act of faith, trust and hope. It goes without saying that deep love for who and what the other is, is a sine qua non.

Age, money and other stuff are all pretty irrelevant when real love (ie decision love, not romantic love) is there.

I don't know what happened, why are all the kids getting married so young these days.

Been trying to figure that one out for years, and still baffled.
It is like these youngsters are "playing housie housie", and just swopped out the dolls for children, then living under the impression they are somehow now grown up or adults.

@ Op, why bother ?

It doesnt mean you dont love each other if you dont.
It doesnt mean you are more responsible.
It doesnt mean you are more dependable and trustworthy.
It is not important regards having children.
It is not important socially.
It does not mean or signify maturity.
It does not mean you are "grown up"

It is a commitment to one person, and you dont need rings , papers and ceremony to prove your commitment to each other.
Just trust.

Mila is right, people differ and the right time for James is not the right time for Tebello.

I have two adult children and my guidelines for them was simple:

- live a bit, grow and get some life experience
- don't consider marriage before around age 30 and only if you want to raise a family
- if you are intent on having children - make sure you can afford it, money and time wise

i completely disagree with the whole "whatever-age-you-ready-is-cool" over-arching theme which seems to be gaining traction here. There are many varying point of views to consider. From the perspective of nothing but "romance" and "commitment", sure pick any age; heck get married at 6 if that's your deal.. lets throw in a few other perspectives such as maturity, sustainability, economics and future generations. There IS such a thing as an optimal age to get married factoring in each dimension of life into the overall equation not only for a balanced marriage, but for balanced children, balanced society and a balanced future society and so forth. It is my opinion that if you want to build up your own life and be totally independent, don't get married while you still relying on mommy's and daddy's money. Make your on way first, gain your independence, grow up, meet the right person (obviously the main thing), experience life a little THEN get married, settle down and have kids. All the pieces of the puzzle are likely to be aligned around the age of 28-30... if a couple can honestly get all their ducks in row before then and just can't wait (like when you're a kid holding in a wee and just HAVE to go).. then by all means, knock yourself out. In any event it's just a piece of paper, if you truly love your partner, you won't need a marriage certificate to show it. :)

+1
There is no "best age".
I have met 16 year olds who are more mature and responsible than some people in the 30's and 40's.

You mean, you have met people in their 30's and 40's that are less mature and responsible than 16 year olds.

At 16 you don't know anything yet. You just have raging hormones.

I'm 25 and I don't think I am ready for marriage at all. Still need a couple of years to figure myself out. I mean, do I go for a blonde or brunette? Way too important a decision to be made in such a rush!

So my 23 year old mate (guy) is getting married at end of year.

What you guys think is a good age for both genders. And does it largely rely on financial stability (guys).

Some of my friends married when they were 23/24 and they are still happy 4 years downthe line.

There is no such thing as a good age, it depends on the people that are getting married.

I'm 28 now and still not ready to get Married. For years I was plagued with this guilt that I'm suppose to find a chick and get married but luckily I have realized that I don't need someone else in my life to be happy and can achieve that all on my own.

If I meet someone and we have fun together and we share the same dreams then great but I'm not hard up to find anyone.
