..Ubuntu, but I just don't like your new personality, Unity. You have become like, like a....um....a woman. Temperamental, to say the least.

I have a found a new friend, his name is Fedora 15 . He is so much cooler. He can be a bit effy sometimes, but nothing like giving him a dose of google can't fix. In fact I just found the best medicine for him. It's called easyLife. It cures everything, flash 32 & 64 bit, skype, etc.

Also it comes standard with Evolution and I just found out it also has the Exchange-Mapi which connect's to Exchange 2007 with no problems now. I am so impressed with him. I can see my calendar, GAL and personal contacts.

He still think's he is a Guppie supporter with the black and white theme, but we can sort that very quickly out.

So in all my friend Ubuntu, you served me well but you have changed to something that I don't like, it is time to part ways, but thank you for the all the good years you served me.

Regards,
D

Sometimes the new Unity interface is quicker to find things, but sometimes I want to go back to the oldstyle interface...

So it's still a toss-up.

Yea it is, but I am just finding Gnome 3 soooo much better. I just like it more, but maybe I will meet my friend again along the road sometime again.

Give Fedora 16 a couple a weeks after release to iron out any glitches in the F15 > F16 preupgrade package and you won't need to reinstall :)

I'm also in love with F15. Can't wait for 16 to come out. Everybody that says Gnome shell is clunky and has bad navigation should really try and use it - navigation for me is a breeze now, I can get in and out of apps now quicker than you can say Bazinga!

Can you not switch to the old interface. I'm sure I read somewhere you can do that ? Or do the problems still continue?

You can switch to Gnome classic but it's no the same thing. Just move over to XFCE.

If there are other Gnome3 lovers out there like myself, do yourself a favour and check out the new OpenSuse release 12.1. First look at it and really seems like they have done an excellent job with this one, also Yast is very nicely integrated.

I don't mean to be pedantic or anything, but you guys do know that you can install Gnome 3 in Ubuntu if you don't want to use unity? Just saying.. use it, don't use it. It makes no sense to me that people do distro-hopping for a feature that is freely available to all distributions. It's like tearing down my bedroom walls and building new ones, just so that I can paint them red.

Oh well. And no, I don't use Ubuntu, well, not technically. I use Mint.

The problem is that Ubuntu only fully support one DE, and that is Unity at this stage. You are going to have issues no matter what you choose to install afterwards, either performance or feature deterioration.

Ubuntu has NEVER played well with anything outside their official support structure, that is why almost all distros at this point that once started with Ubuntu as a base has now moved over to Debian as a base.

Can not agree more. Having tried a few different DE's I went back yo Unity. Takes some getting used to, but the best way to use Ubuntu. For those who prefer Gnome 3 - Fedora is a better option!

Ubuntu should have just focused its energy on making a really good solid linux OS (bug fixes, slick and responsive, better app integration with overall OS, etc) rather than getting into DE cosmetics--nothing wrong with Gnome Shell at all--it works well.

Slick, it is not that easy to install Gnome Shell ontop of Unity in Ubuntu--so many intricacies that it will remove Unity and other dependencies that the DE becomes unusable. Hence people have started their own side-kick type distro using Ubuntu code-base (e.g. RIOME, PINGUYOS, etc).

But I agree, it should be as easy as just installing anothee DE ontop of Unity/Ubuntu--wishful thinking.

You mean Gnome Shell--Ubuntu 11.10 is using Gnome 3.x already--not the Shell; they opted to go for Unity shell.
