Good Car for Dirt roads

The best gravel road vehicles are the Freelander 2 and the Subaru Outback/Forrester.

Unless you go large and get something equipped with air suspension.

Would really like a Subaru but as i said before economy and maintenance might be a bit steep for me. As for land rover not really a big fan. Had one on the farm and lasted only 3 month before we wen back to Isuzu and Toyota.

More kms means more likely to go wrong.. if you cant afford it go for something else. i20 grand perhaps??

I have a 2010 Terios 4X4 (actually just awd) currently on 210 000km. I do about 50 km per day on a dirt road to work and back. Slippery as hell when it rains and a poor road in general.
The Terios have never let me down...
There is a strech of about 200m of clay type soil, that is always a big mess when it rains. Big Ranger and Hilux bakkies gets stuck, but I have never gotten stuck there. Just engage the difflock and drive through.
Awesome little car and fairly confortable as well. Maybe a little underpowered but just for normal driving it is perfect.

That's right. The Golf was bought by the wife before we met and the previous owners lied about accident damage. The entire back side of the car is starting to rust and is showing the shoddy repairs. But at least the engine is still good.

That's good to hear. How has servicing been? and is there anything is should be looking out for on a used Terios?

I see a lot of people here suggesting something that would not be any better on dirt roads than your golf.

Makes no sense to look at a regular car for your needs. An UP, an i10, a tata bolt, all will be as useless and stuffed as your golf.

You need to start at minimum a stepway as suggested, or a proper off road capable car like a terios.

If it's mechanically sound that's a good option, however, it is going to be heavy on petrol as a daily driver. The OP is going to feel the difference at the pump compared to his golf.

A comparable terios or jimny will be much lighter on fuel.

Speaking of the jimny, I don't know about the terios, I think it's actually a two seater. I had a look at one and the parcel shelf they have as a back seat will only work for infants or adults with no legs.
