Outsurance isn't too bad, but the third parties they INSIST on using are the big problem with them.

*****

They also tried to dodge a claim with me where I needed to get them to go through their recorded voice calls to state that I didn't remove the cover like they said I had.

It turned out fine in the end, but it does leave a bad taste.

Which is why I massively prefer my broker who works via email as I have it all in writing.

This is an Outsurance trick. They sign you op on a 5 minute call. The moment you have a claim they investigate the crap out of it.

Yeah.

I never had issues with car insurance with them, other than being forced to use the workshops they send you to. And I even had a direct third party claim once which was pretty smooth.

This particular problem was related to a household claim for jewelry which they claimed I had removed the cover for on the policy and I was like "nope...". What I had removed was the out-and-about cover not the in house cover and the person on the other side had changed it incorrectly.

Outsurance is ridiculous...

Quoted me R1200 for my i20.
Ended up going with Dial Direct for R840.
Paying R640 now with Budget after turning 25.

Lol, Outsurance isn't 'ridiculous', YOU are high-risk as a young male. Your risk profile (and therefore your premium) also depends on the type of car you drive (hijack desirability + 'hot hatch' danger), where you park it at day and night, the car's colour (a black car will cost you R100/month more to insure) and whether you've been in any accidents before.

Can I ask what your excess payment is with Budget? That's how Budget gets their premium so low ... they will rape you one day when somebody else crashes into you and you need to claim. If you really want that, Outsurance can set their excess crazy-high for you too, but I advise rather paying a bit more for the lowest excess you can.

In terms of Outsurance I can only recommend them ... I've been with them for years and years, and my premiums have come down from R1200/month to R750/month now (helped by moving to Cape Town from Johannesburg, and getting a bit older with no crashes).

I recently had to claim from them after somebody else crashed into me, and the whole process was seamless. The crash wasn't my fault, the other party had insurance too, and Outsurance even refunded me my excess (which was only R1 000 anyway). One thing that helped is that I'd been paying the extra R57/month or so for the Car Rental option, so I at least had a rental car for the two weeks it took the panelbeaters to repair my car (so well that you can't see that anything ever happened).

To the OP, don't trust everything people tell you at face value.

I'm currently with budget, and they have tricks that makes them cheaper. For instance they can take up to 15 or 20% of the money when you write your car off. Check the small print.

I was still happy with it, so went ahead. But for instance if you drive a 1 mil car, it could become an expensive exercise.

I wouldnt deal with Outsurance. I was quoted R1450 with Outsurance for my i20, then found Hollard for R1100 a month, used them for 3 months, now I found a broker that a family member uses and I am on R750 a month with a R2500 excess.

By the way, I am a 20 year old male.

Jislaaik, why do you guys pay so much for insurance. Is it an age thing? I pay R650, house hold insurance included, for my Nissan Livina. I'm at Discovery Insure. I get about R400 back in fuel, so I effectively pay R250 for the whole thing. Claimed a new 420 Lt deep freeze last year, paid no excess. They even paid me for the meat I lost.

Yeah it's mainly age (under 25 particularly) and the length of time one has had a drivers license for. Even on cheap (albeit new) cars, insurance premiums are around +- R950 PM at a decent insurance spot. Broker is definitely worth looking at, otherwise prices can be rather exorbitant, especially when insuring a vehicle that has an engine larger than 1.4L and being under 25.

True :D

Moral of the story - always have a broker. These deal direct insurance companies are a problem when it comes to claim time.

I believe the cheaper ones are, yes. However, what value does a broker add that you can't do yourself?

OutSurance is beyond being ridiculous.

They quoted me R10 500pm versus a R2500 premium I pay (with excess waiver).

On another car, they quoted R1700 versus R650 premium I pay

I'm still waiting for my R400 because they failed to beat my insurance premiums.

Outsurance really do take the piss sometimes. I asked for a quote a while back and their monthly premium after haggling was 4.5 times higher than the next quote from Hollard for the same cover.

That may be true, but a R10K premium is nuts. I can't imagine it's for a run-of-the-mill car.
