French red wines are much better than ours, however, our white wines trump theirs every time !

Depends on your taste.

There are very good German wines as well.

One of my friends works for Top 100 Wines and I have been lucky enough to taste some of the best entries they have had. Also the hotel that they use as base of operations is stocked with some really amazing wines and he has brought some home for tasting.

In speaking to people and/or reading about the wines of the world, I have never heard of German wine being considered topnotch. Maybe they are only coming to the fore now ?

IIRC I was told that the Germans over oaked their riesling for many years and thus it was not as popular, but it has really picked up around the world in the the last couple of years.

But I will not swear to it.

just buy the box stuff. after the first 3 glasses it will taste the same. plus if you have a pool nearby they serve as flotation devices..:twisted:
 
Robertson - Merlot, Cab or Shiraz, in either bottles or boxes - extremely good value for money. Unoaked and very fruity. The boxes are about R90 at Checkers, and contain 4 bottles worth.
Zewenwacht Zevenrood is an awesome red blend if you prefer oaked - highly respectable, I would take it anywhere.
 
Wine connoisseurs will have a heart attack when they read this, but I like a lot of the coffee wines and chocolate wines! Just love it.

I stopped drinking expensive wine and now go for the bargin bin and it all tastes the same. Actually, I enjoy the cheaper wines even more especially when I can buy a case for the price of a single bottle.

Fsck them. I drink what tastes good to me and if it is R15 a bottle then so be it :p

And yes some of the coffee wines are good.

Lol, in the week i have a rule of not spending more than R50 a bottle as I have 2-3 glasses of wine a night 3-4 times a week. I love the odd bins from Checkers as it is a "suprise" in every bottle.

Checkers odd bins are the best lucky packets.

I use to also have the R50 rule, now its R30 bucks since I started buying at LCD. If you go to Mooiberge, you can get some awesome deals there. Once had a well known unlabeled wine for R10 a bottle, I bough 10 cases that winter.

Haha, love the "odd ins" on the wine farms as there is no label and the cost is +-30% of the retail price :D

Yeah, but that's the cheap & not-so-nice stuff. Whenever I go to Mauritius, I make it a point to only drink Chilean/Argentinian/Australian wines even though it's summer and 32C+ everyday :)
 
One some of my previous trips to India I tried some of their local red wines.

I think they didn't understand the concept of wine and thought they had to dilute it with water.
