Hi All,

Im looking for a good relatively new strategy game. So far im considering either Civilization V or Anno 2070. I haven't played any of the previous games of those two titles/series. The reviews seem quite good though. Anyone played them?

Im a big fan of both RTS and turn based strategy games but haven't played much for quite a while.

Any suggestions?

Get them both on Steam. They're relatively cheap now. I've seen both on sale as well.

I could have sworn that I have seen Civ 5 in the classic bin last week for around R100.
You can't go wrong with the Civ series, but if I was you I would rather get Civ 4..... a far better game than 5.

Anno is also a good games series, haven't played 2070 yet, but the previous instalment was brilliant.

EDIT: Here we go: http://www.loot.co.za/product/civilization-5/blkt-751-g800

Civ actually has single player campaigns for you to follow, so I'm inclined to agree there.

Civilization V is pretty weak compared to the earlier installments. Quite dumbed-down and very, very light on content. (Low number of techs, units etc).

If you absolutely have to have something new, try Shogun 2: Total War. It's tied with Rome for being the best in the series. AI is much better than Empire/Napoleon and fleet battles actually make sense now, and the game runs much smoother.

Of course, if you want some really deep strategy, the king is still Europa Universalis III or Victoria II. But those aren't for the faint-hearted, they have a massive learning curve.

Have you seen how much dlc is available for Civ V? They made it light on content on purpose.

Exactly. That's the problem. Also, all the DLCs are just maps or new civs. It doesn't add new techs, gameplay mechanics, units (apart from 'the civ's special units), or anything else that was ripped out from Civ 4.

Thanks for the replies. Decisions, decisions....hmmm....

No one with any real time strategy suggestions? (other than starcraft). It seems like there's more to choose from in the turn based strategy world?

I've heard from a few people that Anno 2070 is actually very good. So I'd say try that.

Have you gotten StarCraft 2 yet?

Or Dawn of War 1?

Have u tried company of heroes? Its kinda oldish but still a brilliant game... still keeps me busy...

Yup, i've had my fill of Starcraft 2 until heart of the swarm comes out. Looking for something else.

Anno is very good but its not a rts. Its a city builder with some rts components. I played anno 1404 (the previous installment) and it was a really great game! According to reviews, 2070 is even better.

There has been a huge lack of rts games in the last few years. Its a dying genre imo. I miss the days of starcraft, warcraft, command and conquer, age of empires, age of mythology etc.

The only good 'real' rts out now is starcraft 2. Bloody good game and addictive as well, and the online arena is very competitive and packed with players and custom maps etc.

The other decent strategy game, which is turn based, is shogun 2.

I'm looking forward to C&C generals 2 which is being built with DICE's frostbite 2 engine (think bf3).

I really recommend you get the first Dawn of War and the first two expansions off Steam. Leave Soulstorm.

Yeah I agree, which is why im finding it so hard to find good rts or turn based strategy games. Although I do play the occassional fps, adventure or rpg, i've always enjoyed strategy games far more.

It's because you can't put a decent RTS on console. If you look at sales numbers it's obvious why publishers prefer console. People just don't buy PC games anymore.

Played some Anno 2070 and very good sim-city type game, but late on in the game the micro management start to kill the game.
Another option for a RTS is Supreme Commander 1, love that game. Just hate how they ruined it in 2.

True. What a pitty. Strategy games are awesome.

2 was on console. See the correlation?
