I don’t use Vodacom’s HSPA service very often, but we are currently in the middle of nowhere and were pleasantly surprised at the performance. The USB modem jumped between GPRS and HSDPA, but I fired up an old Huawei B970 and get good speeds – around 2 Mbps down.

I know there are many justified complaints, but what the cellular providers did well is to ensure SA is connected. Really cool to sit on a farm and surf the web at fast speeds.

Hmmmmm. so when will you switch off and relax????

But you are correct; between Vodacom and MTN they have extensive coverage in South Africa's rural areas.

90% of my data use is mobile, my experience is has been relatively problem free with an efficeint GPRS/HSDPA ISP like Vodacom. I am of the opinion that the Cell C,Virgin Mobile, Telkom 3G and 8Ta have a long way to go to beat the likes of Vodacom/MTN in coverage and efficeint service, their pricing might be better but pricing is not the only factor (You gets what you pays for). There is no FREE lunch/breakfast.

Imagine my surprise when we were at Vleesbaai, a small private beach 20 kms from Mossel Bay, and got full 3G reception with Vodacom! Schweeettt!!

.. Yet I battled to get signal in Randpark Ridge for almost a year :/

I see GPRS on my phone phone more than anything else!

We strive to have 3G connectivity wherever we have GSM signal.

After struggling for months with Vodacom and throughput being non-existant in Randburg from Friday 7pm to Monday 7am every weekend and weekdays between 7pm and 10pm every night, I bought ADSL. Fortunately Vodacom is ok in other areas for when I am away from home. But no worries, MTN is almost as bad.

I can finally talk with my friends on Skype without being constantly cut-off.

Vodacom's coverage is excellent, speeds are generally good. Price is the drawback though.
