Goodbye 7; I'm sorry XP, take me back

not a good idea, the first SP hasn't even been released, you leaving yourself open to lots of vulnerabilities.

the day I installed Win7 is the day I disabled updates ..... 9 months on and as long as I have an updated AV and use common sense, it should be fine. If not, hey format.

Probably he doesn't have an updated anti-virus if updates aren't his thing.

I do have an updated AV. So does the other 4 pc's on the same network at home. I do quite a bit of downloading every month and this pc is just purring along. It's only switched off with lengthy power failures. (Happened only once this year) and it's on a UPS in any case.

It performs better than my updated, legal, Win 7 @ work. (My work pc specs is way better than the home one)
