I was commenting on the OPs resilience to stick to such an old OS, perfectly understandable if it was Vista, but this is win7 and its proven itself

It really doesn't add anything new which is worthwhile. XP is still better, if you can keep XP go ahead. Support will end in 2014 but that's 3 more years. Running FireFox with a good anti-virus and firewall/HIPS solution will negate the need to patch XP after 2014 anyway.

I don't know. 7 had a few nice features.

I liked the idea behind building up faxes from different sources, but the implementation was terrible.
I liked being able to mute audio on a per application basis (keep FireFox and the system muted while VLC runs normally), I'm going to miss that.
I liked that it played my DVDs using VLC, without me telling it to (although getting XP to do that might just be settings).
I can't run Office 2010 on XP x64 (I knew you couldn't run Office 64bit on XP x64, but as it turns out, you can't run Office 32 bit on XP x64 either); I wanted to try that. Put it this way, I didn't hate Office 2010 on first sight.
I liked that all my hardware worked out of the box (and I liked the "devices" window - the one with the pretty pictures of all your devices), with XP, I had to install drivers off the CD.

I might have even kept it, out of the ten serious issues I had with it, 9 were easily resolved. I just didn't have time to fight with it on my main working desktop. I'm going to set up a media centre PC in the next few months, and I'll install it on that; see if I can get used to all the changes.

Edit: Who said I bought Windows 7?:confused:;):D

You want to make Win 7 look like XP?...

Why the hell would you want to cripple all the good features of Win7? The new task bar is MUCH more efficient, the new start menu is also more efficient.

Well it hasn't proven itself to him. It also hasn't proven itself to me. Sadly it's the default now. It's ok in general, and sometimes it's necessary.

I told you I have it on a 10.1 inch Sony Vaio. I've had it on it for over 2 mo. I've also used it before and I'm still not impressed. Oh you mean I should drink the Kool-Aid.

Are you using a legal copy of 7 or not?

I WAS running a cracked copy, gave me endless issues, but I have a legal copy at work, so I got myself a legal copy at home, and have NO problems.
7 is definately great compared to XP SP3.

its easy to crack win7, just stay away from Update KB971033
 
Windows 7 has been running very smoothly on my three year old crappy laptop since February & Windows XP now just feels ancient and slow compared to it.

It's the same with your TV and mobile phone - a change is as good as a holiday. :)
 
Well here's the answer: Dual-os.-XP-and-Win7.

It's like a mullet, business on top; party out back. I'm going to reinstall 7 onto it's own partition. <burn's voice>Excellent.</burn's voice>

not a good idea, the first SP hasn't even been released, you leaving yourself open to lots of vulnerabilities.
