Goodbye 7; I'm sorry XP, take me back

Well, I've decided what I'm going to do. All 6 of my documents (hey, I've only been using it for a week) are being moved to F: and G:, which will then be unplugged. C: and D: will be DBAN-ed and XP's coming back. I can't live without Fax Console, and nobody's given me a reason to keep 7. I know I can get 7 to look and feel like XP, and a few of the tweaks you guys have mentioned have made 7 a lot more pleasant to use, but without a good reason to keep 7, I'd rather change back before it becomes more difficult than it already is. Thanks for the tips.
 
I went back to XP after Vista, but loved 7.
The longer i used it the more i realised this was truly an upgrade beyond mere eye candy.
Windows 7 is in my humble opinion very stable compared with the constant reinstalls i had to do on XP.

Not sure if I understand your problem correctly... but try right click in open space under your folders in the side panel and then uncheck "Expand to current view". I know I found my folder structure rather annoying until I did that.
 
been using windows 7 now for almost a year or something, cant ever look back, using it at home and at work. Havent had a single program that doesnt work, a few compatibility issues in the past, but those have been resolved. Its 10 times better than xp for me, even when running for a few days, the memory management is better I think.

Tip: Keep an open mind, dont be deadset on old features.. learn to adapt and adjust and you will love it.

I'd love to use the new Fax and Scan, it allows you to build up faxes from all sorts of different sources, just like you do with a real fax, but I can't get the recipient name, date/time, and number of pages fields to fill on the cover page. XP's Fax Console doesn't let me build up faxes, it just allows print to fax - 1 source per fax, but at least it works. Also, the cover page editor in 7 is buggy as hell.

It's not my hardware either, I'm running a Q9550 with 4GB RAM. I honestly don't understand how something could be more reliable than XP; I ran it for over a year, only rebooting on upgrade Wednesdays, and never had one blue screen or crash (until the crash that signalled the end of my HDD).

I really would like to try 7 for longer, but it caused a delay in sending out payment confirmation fax, which delayed my roofers from starting my order, which is going to delay the entire project. I can't let this happen again. Tomorrow, I'll be posting from an XP machine.

nobody's given me a reason to keep 7 -- Ok here is 1 good reason.. Crappy Autorun virusses is the death of XP can't plug any divice in with a autorun without infecting ur PC. Windows 7 don't have that problem and more and

Windows 7 start menu search + or basically the way that win7 searches for stuff is so much better.

To me, 7 seems less stable (XP was rock solid). My seven is rock solid. my Xp machine is the one blue screening the whole time
Fax console has been replaced by Windows Fax and Scan, which is utter crap, along with the cover page editor. Not qualified to comment on that
I don't like the transparent program bars. Then change the theme
Net Limiter 2 doesn't run on 7 But Netlimiter 3 does.
The improvements I was hoping for didn't materialise. (I was hoping to run Office 2010 in 64 bit, but the 64 bit version doesn't support a few of the features that I use. I also wanted to switch from yawcam to the Microsoft software for my webcam, but as it turns out, yawcam is better.) NQTC
Yesterday, some security guard stopped me from saving a batch file to a program directory. you can turn that off
I don't know where anything is. lol, You can make explorer work the same as the xp one, Just forgot how right now.
I don't like having to scroll through the start menu's program folder to find my stuff. I have a 24" screen FFS, let me see all my programs at once.
I don't like the new task bar. I want my task bar shortcuts separated from my running apps. If I've got explorer running, and I want to open another explorer window, I don't want to have to right click to do it. Middle click then :D

Installing OSs is like having a marlin hook shoved through your nose. Removing them is like having it ripped out. Lol :D
I might not be able to run the latest software (in the future).
 
Well consider this; Microsoft will support XP until mid 2014 so there is no pressing need for you to upgrade to Windows 7.
My suggestion would be for you to stay on XP until all the problems have been resolved (Microsoft and 3rd parties); +- 1 to 2 years.

Note: The fact that Microsoft included the ability to run XP in a VM should be a clear indication all was not well in the "backward compatibility department".
 
I personally love Windows 7 and have no problems with it. Certainly far less than I had on XP or Vista....
 
I guess OP stuck with Win95 for years aswell? :p
IMO win7 is the best OS MS has made yet, stable, fast (no slow downs) and user friendly, you just have to get used to it, it takes a week or 2

Autorun was handled really stupidly in XP.
But, if you're keeping your XP machine up-to-date, you would have implemented the 2 patches listed here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/967940.mspx , which sets autorun off and fixes the broken autorun that made it nearly impossible for a user to turn off autorun on their own.

You can switch that back to XP style as well. Personally I like it, as most of my work is done on either a laptop or a netbook.

So you agree that I was correct in my anti-Win 7 hype sentiment? I have a Sony ultra portable - yeah with Windows 7 - Win 7 is OK but I don't think it's worth buying.
It really doesn't add anything new which is worthwhile. XP is still better, if you can keep XP go ahead. Support will end in 2014 but that's 3 more years. Running FireFox with a good anti-virus and firewall/HIPS solution will negate the need to patch XP after 2014 anyway.

Well Win95 actually ran on top of DOS and was not fully 32 bit while Windows XP was the first consumer NT based Windows. Win 2K was a bit faster than XP but Win2K was not available for home users. So suggesting he goes back to Win95 is like saying he doesn't want to upgrade his 2001 car for a 2010 one and should instead go back to a hand started 1900s automobile.
