This weekend I've had it with Afrihost and I've decided it's time to lay down my loyalty and find a new ISP.

From constant dropped packets to their incompetent staff, to the incredible greed, I've decided to find a new home.

Having said that, which ISP would you recommend for a power user? I don't mind paying an additional fee to get out of CGNAT, I do mind it being forced down my throat without the common decency of as much as an email.

Im hesitant to even look at cool ideas. It seems they'll drop you in and out of CGNAT on a whim based on what I've read here: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/cool-ideas-fibre-isp-–-feedback-thread-6.1279361/post-33357443

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Edit: I am based in Pretoria, and I have both Frogfoot and Openserve Fibre to the residence. What would even be the bees-knees would be a static public IPv4 address, but, I am not holding my breath on that one.

On a slightly unrelated topic, anyone know if it's possible to bypass the ONT and plug the Fibre directly into my SPF port? That would be even better!

Show me on this doll where the bad man Sean Nourse touched you.

Afrihost owns Cool Ideas.

That's great to know!

So not only are Afrihost and Axxess off of the table, but Cool Ideas too.

I went further down the hole... so Home connect, supersonic and MTN is also off the table.

Frogfoot is F**** stay away uptime is garbage, nice to have for failover but worthless (incoming Froggies forum troll)
Openserve would be the better one for uptime, So ISP you could try https://www.mindthespeed.co.za/ or https://websquad.co.za/ @websquadza

Doubtful regarding your sfp question there, only can do it on a Business line with DFA or Liq don't think Openserve nor kakfoot would allow direct sfp connection. Would be nice if I could run it through the cage of my Rb4011 or even my ccr but meh I guess Cat7 cable and the port of the ONT will do

I would check what local ISP's are around with decent ratings and give one of them a try.
The smaller ISPs are more likely to have human interactions than phone bots and call centres that do nothing but read off a screen.

Thank you. I'll start searching.

The irony is, an AI would only waste electricity doing the jobs these support agents do. Their support agents are also wasting oxygen on top of electricity.

Happy to assist. If you've got an openserve line and want test creds, PM me. We have static IPV4 available at a small additional monthly cost. V6 as standard.

Unfortunately both FNO options you mention use gpon and require some some form of ONT to convert optical signals to electric ones. There is an open source sfp ONT project you can search for, but frankly it's much easier to keep the FNO provided box running and hidden away in the back of your cabinet (besides the added benefit of providing the FNO with line stats when troubleshooting your service).

Call me ignorant but I seriously didn't know yall existed. I'm super happy with paying for the IPv4 static, and I'm really liking what I read about you. Do I have to accept the FTU router? Or can I just ignore the courier until they return it to you?

EDIT: Also, whats with this in your FUP?

Hosting of Game Servers is not permitted on FTTH services

Even though we are majority owned by Afrihost we still run everything completely independently, including our network.

CGNAT is used for overflow in the case of a router failure or the like, it is not standard practice.

Also why we are rated as the best performing network in South Africa.

Sounds like you weren't on Openserve because I have 3 family members all running on Openserve with Afrihost and none of them have CGNAT addresses. All have public IPs that I can remote into.
