Goodbye Afrihost. Who's next?

Sounds like you weren't on Openserve because I have 3 family members all running on Openserve with Afrihost and none of them have CGNAT addresses. All have public IPs that I can remote into.
Good guess! Currently on FrogFoot

Yeah I’m also confused about the CGNAT comments around Afrihost.

Public IPv4 and IPv6 here and very happy camper.

OP, sounds like the FNO is the problem, changing the ISP wont help, I recommend moving over the account with AH to openserve.
So after a long chat yesterday, Afrihost assigned me a public IP on the FF network. So that tells me the CGNAT issue isnt a FF issue, but an AH move.

I understand FF might be the reason for my packetloss, but my frustration comes in with me providing AH with days of dpinger logs, showing my gateway becomes unavailable, then being asked if I have restarted my router. The logs show exactly where and when the router was restarted, so they're using canned responses in hopes that the problem either solves itself, or that I just get annoyed enough to leave it.

@Afrigirl will sort you out.

Hi.

Please share the ticket reference so I can go through it.

Why don't you rather share with me why you've unilaterally altered my product, and didn't even have the common decency to inform me? Not even as much as an email to let me know "Hey ****. Get lubed up. CGNAT is coming whether you want it or not"

We allocate NAT first on new MAC addresses because we don't know if the device getting the IP is genuine. Once the MAC address is mapped to a subscriber, we can manually allocate a public IP because of the IPv4 space constraint.

Even though we are majority owned by Afrihost we still run everything completely independently, including our network.

CGNAT is used for overflow in the case of a router failure or the like, it is not standard practice.

Also why we are rated as the best performing network in South Africa.
Would like to chime in here, have had absolutely no issues whatsoever with Cool Ideas and their support staff are always on the ball and willing to help, I always recommend Cool Ideas to anyone asking for an ISP.

Keep up the good work guys, the rating is deserved

Check with your neighbors or local Facebook group.
The people in the same are will be more helpful than people in other towns.

I tend to stick to the smaller guys. They must provide good service to survive.

So I am now with "Mind The Speed" for about 3-4 years and in that time little to no problems.
They even send me alerts when there is problems on their network, but by the time I check, it's resolved.

Here is a good lesson for everyone on this forum.

For the most part, most of us are far more technically minded and knowledgeable than the average Tier 1 service desk person.
Rather contact @Afrigirl directly to get your issues resolved. This bypasses the standard rebooting the router 12 times drama.

This weekend I've had it with Afrihost and I've decided it's time to lay down my loyalty and find a new ISP.

From constant dropped packets to their incompetent staff, to the incredible greed, I've decided to find a new home.

Having said that, which ISP would you recommend for a power user? I don't mind paying an additional fee to get out of CGNAT, I do mind it being forced down my throat without the common decency of as much as an email.

Im hesitant to even look at cool ideas. It seems they'll drop you in and out of CGNAT on a whim based on what I've read here: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/cool-ideas-fibre-isp-–-feedback-thread-6.1279361/post-33357443

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Edit: I am based in Pretoria, and I have both Frogfoot and Openserve Fibre to the residence. What would even be the bees-knees would be a static public IPv4 address, but, I am not holding my breath on that one.

On a slightly unrelated topic, anyone know if it's possible to bypass the ONT and plug the Fibre directly into my SPF port? That would be even better!
You can do bypass on vumatel.

Call me ignorant but I seriously didn't know yall existed. I'm super happy with paying for the IPv4 static, and I'm really liking what I read about you. Do I have to accept the FTU router? Or can I just ignore the courier until they return it to you?

EDIT: Also, whats with this in your FUP?

Hosting of Game Servers is not permitted on FTTH services

I'm clearly not making enough noise round these parts  You don't need to accept the FTU router, nor pay for the courier of it - just select that option at checkout.

WRT to the self hosted game servers, these tend to attract bad traffic that breaks FTTH networks. We don't monitor client traffic, so you're free to do what you want to with the line. But should bad traffic trigger our edge monitoring, we will pick it up at the edge and our team will reach out to you. This clause is protect the network and other FTTH clients, in the case that your server is attracting the kind of traffic we prefer to avoid. There are better options for hosting gaming servers, such as Colo and DIA, where the infrastructure is designed specifically to cater for this traffic. If this is something you're looking for, please reach out.
