Goodbye CellC, hello 8ta

CELL C should be brave and go head to head with 8ta.

Why 50GB for daytime usage?

This is disingenuous!

Why not at least 60GB? It would make it more compelling. As previous posters have suggested that the 'peak' data is what is actually important.

Making a bundle of say 70GB available for peak usage would have made this deal a no-brainer. Instead this caveat has still left the door ajar for 8ta for the many people who are currently happy with Cell-C, coming to the end of their pre-paid terms, but see this new package as missing the mark.

They will have to modify their browsing behaviour with the 50GB bundle, as they will be cautious during the day; which is silly. It all points to taking the 60GB+60GB from 8ta.

And making 50GB available is trying to create confusion and make it difficult for like-for-like comparisons; perfected by none other than cell phone companies.

Disingenuous? Not in this case. Chicken, stingy, cautious or perhaps unadventurous but certainly not "lacking in candour" or dishonest.

The Giga 200 from CellC IS going head to head with 8ta's 60+60. There are, however pros and cons on both sides and these will vary from user to user. In some cases CellC will win and in others 8ta will. Time will tell which one is the more popular. In the meantime this is a VERY good deal as is the offer from 8ta.

If all the service providers offered identical products at identical prices and gave identical service how would you decide which one to pick? The service providers would also probably wind up having to defend themselves in terms of the Competitions Act!

I usually switch off the computer at about 23:30. 8ta's offpeak kicks in at 23:00 so I would get to use a portion of the available data over the year. CellC's offpeak starts at midnight so I will probably never use any of the available data so 150Gb means nothing to me. Someone else may, however, be able to make full use of this which will then leave 8ta in the dust.

If I went with CellC I would get about 15Gb less data for the 365 days as I would have been able to use some of the 8ta offpeak data but my download speed would be roughly 4 times faster . Price isn't everything. If I was starting from scratch this would be a no-brainer for me. CellC would win hands down even though their cost to me would be about R36/Gb compared to about R28/Gb from 8ta. (The Wooosh works for me :) ) As it is, I'm seriously considering writing off over 10 months of the 8ta data and switching back to CellC. This is, however, no longer a no-brainer as it will raise the effective cost of the data I use for the next 11 months to about R70/Gb. :) Still not a bad price but I now have to decide between adequate speed and beer or high speed and no beer. :)

I use just under 5Gb per month so the 50Gb will give me just over 11 months. If the bundle was 70Gb I wouldn't be able to use it all. If you use about 70Gb during the day per year then the 50Gb will last you just under 9 months. My daughter uses about 2.5Gb/month, a friend has a cap of 2Gb/month. If you did a survey you would probably find that 50Gb for 365 days isn't an exact fit for anybody. If the bundle is too big it raises the effective cost per Gb. If the bundle is too small it won't last the full 365 days so you have to buy more data a bit sooner than anticipated. 50Gb is, however, probably a good compromise for most people. You can be reasonably sure this is not a thumb-suck and CellC did their homework before settling on 50Gb. :)

I think Cell C is better offer for two reasons:
a. Better coverage, it will be this way for the next year ot two.
b. This is heavy use offer, not for Web browsing (500MB p/m) or with Skype plus full software update (2GB p/m). These users will download movies, full DVD's it can be scheduled for night shift.

I agree, 23:00 shift gives an edge for 8ta (I use it now while typing), but I am sure that game players will generally prefer Cell C for more predictable network response. And 80GB extra for the same price, it counts.

In summary both offers are great, but I am not heavy downloader and there is no offer for me. There is only Cell C R399 3GB/365 and nothing between.

I was in the same boat, but in my neighbourhood I get significantly faster speeds on 8ta's network so that was already my first consideration to go with 8ta over Cell C. Then I also think 8ta's off-peak period which starts at 23:00 is much more usable and offers more value as I can use more of this off-peak data than would be the case with Cell C which starts after midnight. I use about 10GBs of data a month so the 8ta offer should hopefully last more than 6 months and perhaps even longer if I can move most of my downloads into the off-peak zone, especially Steam downloads. But both are very good deals in my opinion.

If Cell C can improve their network in Pretoria I would give them greater consideration. I get so many dropped calls and poor internet throughput on my cellphone (have contract with Cell C) that I don't know whether its my phone that's giving crap or the network or both...

8ta speed is fantastic when you get a connection. They destroy Cell C in every aspect when you get a signal.

I totally agree with you. Cell C is headed down hill. They not even providing feedback as to what problems they having. I bought an 8ta sim this weekend and my area is NOT properly covered but im still connecting on the 8ta network and speeds are in 2Mb region and thats perfect for me
