Android wins, iPhone loses

Smartphones powered by Google’s Android software increased their global market share as iPhones lost ground in the absence of new models being unleashed by Apple, the International Data Corporation reported Wednesday.

Lol this is almost like rooting for a team in sports.

But its worse, these companies make more money by creating fans that spend unnecessarily large amounts of money!

And that goes for either Android or iOS

Not true with Android. You can pick up Android devices for next to nothing.

As and Android user the saddens me.

I would prefer Android lose market share to Windows Phone. We need 3 major players and not 1 global denominator. Cause see what it did to the Desktop market. No real innovation on that front for ages.

Google hasn't stopped innovating. I don't think they will stop any time soon. :)

Cause its competing with iOS, just wait till they see that there is no more reason to fight to be no 1. Happened with Microsoft back in the 80's early 90's can just as easy happen to Google.

Apple iPhones will surpass Android again when the new iPhone 5s is launched. Also, one tends to forget that the iPhones consists of one model (with different sizes) and two older models. It competes against an array of Android devices. Pretty much every phone manufacturer jumps on the Android bandwagon nowadays.

:erm:

I seriously doubt Apple will shove Android’s market share of 79.3 percent with a 5s...

Well in light of the fact that almost every phone company has an Android handset out, I think Apple have done well to be seen as such fierce competition for so long.

That being said, I hope iOS7 brings some new stuff to the table otherwise they are indeed falling quite far behind (in the phone handset market anyway)

Good!

Haters will hate, I guess.

Google has done a great job to get Android onto so many devices, from so many different manufacturers. However, Google doesn't make any money directly from Android - the win for them is the growth in the overall smartphone market. The more people connecting to the internet, the more money Google makes from their ads. Unfortunately, a lot of the Android growth comes from people that don't buy many apps, or access the internet very often. On average, Google makes more money per iPhone than per Android device, which is why Google continue to make really great iOS apps.

Agreed, but Apple is in month 11 of its (approximately) 12 month model life, so its hardly surprising to see their market share declining. iOS will never be able to compete directly with Android on market share. Apple's objective is to keep increasing their sales year on year. In the last quarter they sold 31.3m iPhones, up from 26m in the same period last year. With a new iPhone due in the next couple of months, iOS 7 in the final stages of beta testing, and possibly a new, lower cost iPhone targeted at emerging markets, I think Apple's future is looking quite bright. I wouldn't write them off just yet!

Apple might be losing the market share battle, but its doing very well profit-margin wise. Their overcharged iproducts are making them tons of money. Samsung for instance might be selling loads more android devices compared to Apple, but many of these devices are cheap low profit margin devices.
Should be interesting later this year when Apple launches their low end cheaper Iphone. They are looking for a bigger cut of the market share cake, but this new phone will probably not make them lots of money. It migt even canibalize sales from their flagship model to be released later this year. Interesting times ahead.

This is proof of the sheer stupidity and ignorance of the public out there. Anyone who knows even a tiny little bit about security issues will not go Android and then there is the question of build quality of hardware devices.

There are many cheap cars, some with extensive lists of standard specifications, yet their market volume is not an indication of quality. Create your own small herd, never follow fashion or popular public opinion. Majority rule is not necessarily good government, either. Democracies around the world are in shambles.
