Google developing free Dropbox competitor

Will be interesting to see. I know I for one really fell in love with Dropbox when a friend referred me (yes, he got 250mb free storage for it). It really saves me so much trouble!
I would definitely use it for a lot more things if bandwidth and line speed wasn't that big an issue...

I'm quite happy with Dropbox as it is. I participated in the beta (photo upload), spent a day upload a bunch of photos, and now I've got 7.2GB of storage to play with.

Still it would be nice to see what Google has to offer.

well my gmail account has about 7.6gb, maybe they allocate that disk space to you?

Actually a cool idea... Wouldn't mind that, or something like free 1Gb accounts and if your account is linked to a gmail account you also get whatever spaced is left on your gmail account.

Is that beta still in effect? I keep forgetting to upload more photos.

LOL I've been uploading videos of my office carpet. :D
/OT

What I've just done is take a picture of the carpet, made 191 copies of it and then renamed them with automator to IMG_XXXX.jpg. Much quicker than taking a video. :D

I don't particularly trust Google but I'll give their service a shot too.
Pfft... it's called taking one lens cap photo and utilizing copy+paste :p
I came to the same realisation after considering what it would be doing to my camera.

Why carpet you might ask? A solid colour lends itself to higher compression and therefore smaller files - 11.9mb vs 3.7mb in this case. ;)

Why aren't more people using Microsoft Skydrive seeing it is 25Gb of storage.

Is it the 100Mb per file limit?

Anyone?

Yeah, the 100Mb per file put me off. Also, I guess many people is just very happy with Dropbox's minimalist approach.

I'm really looking forward to Google Drive. I like my Google services integrated, but then again, it needs to be really good to beat Dropbox, with which I'm very happy with.

If the Google product, has the great sync feature that Dropbox offers then awesome. I successfully sync at the moment my Mac at work, to my Linux laptop and to my XP machine at home. Also if Google keep there storage price so cheap then their new product will be a winner I think 20gb storage there is $5 per year currently.

I was fortunate to have an edu student email address so I have 18gb free storage at present, from Dropbox.

What exactly do you guys use dropbox for..?

Mainly syncing files between multiple computers and mobile devices like phones and tablets. It's also great for backing up those important files, and sharing files with specific individuals or groups of people.

I also have a .edu email address, but I currently sit at about 6.4GB as everybody I know already use Dropbox. How did you go about successfully inviting so many people (32)?

This is good news, but I must say Dropbox is really good and the linux client is very well implemented and integrates just as well as the Windows version. If google's product has a good linux client, I'll give it a go.
