Google discloses Windows GDI bug

If BITS is running something is making it run and you need to find what is causing it to keep running.

One of the reasons for this to happen is something is not quite in synch with Windows Update. You need to try and reset WU

Search for a bat file to reset WU and try that.

In addition, sometimes (I can't remember what that area is called) the area that Windows stores the cached update files is corrupted or an update file lands on a bad sector on the drive - WU then constantly tries to redownload the file because it picks up that the checksums don't match resulting in what you're experiencing.

Very useful article here:

Yes could be. But it could be anything that interrupted the auto download. Especially over a wireless connection. That is why I also do not stay signed in with the MS account and have disabled auto update in the Apps store.

I absolutely detest ANY auto settings anywhere and spend a lot of time finding these infuriating things that run by themselves.

For example, right now there are 19 updates sitting in the list on the Apps store for me. And I have already trimmed plenty of rubbish that I do not want. And some of the cr@p comes back over again.

Thank you for all the assistance guys, it means a lot.

I'm now done for the day, will continue the struggle tomorrow. I have disabled BITS, will see if that makes any difference tomorrow morning.

Sounds like MS are leaving those backdoors open for the NSA.
This is much deeper. It is used by Windows various components, part of Windows inner operation. They can't fix what is a part of the patching system. They must rewrite everything from scratch, then give backdoors to NSA (again). An ordinary bug would be fixed in a week.

Disabling BITS by itself didn't do anything, I also had to disable the Windows Update Service under Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services

This is obviously not a permanent solution as I need updates eventually, the sooner the better.

I see there are currently two updates available, so I suspect they are the culprits by either being corrupt or something.

I'll try and see if the article posted by AfricanTech might be a possible solution this weekend.

Fingers crossed

Good luck. At least you've (kind of) pinpointed the source of the problem.

If that doesn't sort it out you may have to bite the bullet and reinstall

Agree, but if you can hold out do the install after Patch Tuesday next month as there is a fairly substantial upgrade that is supposed to be released then.

It is okay to disable things as part of the fault finding process, but not a good idea longer term.

Not only that. It is not permanent solution, as service will restart after 10 minutes or after reboot. Check it out...

Not true. At leas on the Home version this service will restart.

Interesting, I really wouldn't know as I'm using Pro, but will keep my eyes open next time I restart as it's still disabled since this morning.

The home version is a different animal to Pro. That is the advantage of pro, it allows one to exercise more control over what is happing.

So how far have you got with working through the process in the link?
Anymore insights as to what is happening?

I honestly haven't bothered yet, I'm just so happy I can finally use my pc the way it was meant to be used.

The link itself is pretty straight forward, will do that tonight at home and then run updates and take it from there.

Keep eyes on, as I saw it on the pro version too. Not always, perhaps it depends on type of updates. If you have Pro version, then policy editor is better, was always obeyed in my experience. All other solutions are taken from Windows 7/8 they are not neccessary working on Windows 10.

Also install O&O Shutup Win10
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

It allows you to disable to more crap that Win 10 does.

Quite useful software.

Do you know if it works on WIN 10 Home as well as other versions of WIN 10?

@Purly, I would suggest that you first sort out the basic problem before running this add on just in case this add on masks the problem you are trying to fix.

Agreed

I'll install this on my home pc and play around with it so long, thanks animal531

I tried what the article suggested with no success. It did find some errors which it apparently fixed, but needless to say it did not solve the continuous downloading part.

I have once again disabled the BITS and Windows Update services.

I'm just tired of struggling with this for now, going to take a breather for a week or two before trying anything else.
