Google Earth and 'collateral damage'

I think it goes without saying that Google needs to keep some stuff off the Google Radar. Since their liberties are protected by the US government, they will have to adhere to US secrecy demands I guess.

Exactly

And why they didn't think of that in the first place is beyond me... "freedom of xxxxx" is a load of bull when people die for it.

Who wrote this crook of bull S#!%

Unbelievable!

Google Earth is not real time and Google Earth does not control satellites. The images on are 2-6 years old and there is no way the US government is going to let a company take satellite imagery of current US or UK bases in Iraq and then publish them on the Internet. To say that it can show the locations of tents and lavatories in a military base in Iraq is extremely RIDICULOUS.

Mountains, hills and buildings that have been there before the war, yeah thats possible (and certainly helpful to insurgents) but tents or lavatories? Come on, get real.

Sounds like the author needed something interesting to write about and made the entire thing up.

agreed.

"There is nothing petty about the Google-enabled targeting of soldiers - and Google should at least step up and fully explain its thinking about such matters."

Maybe the US should fully explain its thinking when it decided to give Saddam Hussein the weapons needed to blow up their own soldiers, wake up people its not googles free information that targets and kills people, people kill people and there would be no tents or lavatory platforms to target if they didnt have the weapons in the first place. Maybe we should blame the water the terrorists drink because it keeps them alive and allows them to target us troops

All google does is make it easier to get information that is available for free or cheap anyway. All it cost me to get digital copies of every topo sheet of SA was the 50-spindle pack of CD's it took to write the data to.
Similarly all the digitized aerial photography of the country is available for free, all you pay for is the media to write it on.
Not that google isn't doing their bit to advance the cause. Go browse Baghdad or Lebanon and see if you can find any trace of the bombing campaigns during the wars there.

Move The Tent

Google Earth does not provide real time pictures of the areas.

Just move the tents......... no problem.

The countries intelligence departments i guarantee have far more advanced access to images than google earth.

if this is what is available to the public just imagine what the militaries can do in spying on people.

Just make the base a low res area? isn't that just easier?
