Mostly all sites are quite accessible, but Google.co.za, or .com can drive me nuts! IF I wait for a response, it can take up to 5 or 6 minutes! Anyone have any ideas...resons for this? (Telkomsa ADSL 384) Using wireless, & Vista, but it seems the same on XP. In fact, at times we have up to 4 PC's connected...all the same. I'd be grateful for any advice...Telkom know nothing except how to 'reset' the line!

I also have a 384 line here and it works fine. At home I have a faster line, both work fine. See the address bar, make sures its https, once you login to gmail go to settings and next to "Browser connection:", choose, Always use https

i thort i was the only one experiencing this!
i did find that with gmail if i use chrome and dont switch accounts its alot more responsive than from any other browser (but me thinks its got something do with caching)
my 2c worth.

try changing the DNS
close all browsers

control panel->network connections-> right click local area connection->properties->double click tcp/ip internet protocol-> select use the followiing DNS-> primary DNS 208.67.222.222-> secondary DNS 208.67.220.220

apply these settings reopen browser and try again

The thing is...if I use my 3G, it works fine! That's what led me to the dreaded Telkom thing!

I have the same issue at work, but at home, it's fine. The reason I believe is that our work ADSL line uses satelite comms for international traffic (cheaper) but my ADSL at home is through Axxess, which supply internationl bandwidth on fiber. I think 3G international bandwidth is also via fiber. Not 100% certain though. If you have an uncapped solution, you're almost certainly on satellite for int coms.

*Just to add to that. I also had issues other than it just being slow. But that was yesterday and today seems fine again.

I just switched over from my IS semi-shaped (Axxess) to my SAIX (Axxess) shaped account and google.com/ig is working again (as well as some other sites like hetzner.co.za that wouldn't connect). It's a lot slower now on the international speed test, but it works for all sites.

That just proves the value of pre-paid - you can use the account that works best when you need it!:D

i have the same problem, it's driving me NUTS. I'm on a 4mb saix line, had this problem when i was on 512 also. Sometimes google is blazing, other times it just hangs for minutes at a time.
Also, when i get my google results, i click on a link and then instead of going straight to the site in question, it once again needs to redirect through google (probably for ad revenue or tracking purposes, what the hell do i know..). So once again, sometimes this is a quick process, other times i have to wait AGAIN. Could it have something to do with the ZA google servers not being able to handle the demand? I'm sure there must be someone infinitely smarter than me here who has an answer? Please help...

Do you by any chance have the skype plugin installed?

I don't have Skype plugin installed, but loads of others. Above is exactly the issue that I have, and I think it does have to do with ZA servers too...not sure why but it's in the back of my tiny mind! I've tried the DNS suggested, and it is slightly better, but often redirected to some other crap sites...opensomething...at the end of the day, I'll just blame Telkom...I think they deserve that! BTW, I do download my gmail fine via pop3, so thanks for the Google Gears suggestion...other google stuff is more problematic. Only go into gmail online when I'm missing an email and check spam folder for it!

i'm on webafrica. i did have the skype plugin installed, but i'd disabled it as it served no real purpose for me. after having completely uninstalled the plugin, problem is solved (touch wood)!! Google is MUCH more responsive now. Thanks Voodoo, O Wise One!
I'll report back if the problem returns.
