Google has announced it will remove carrier SMS text messaging from Hangouts on Android after 22 May.

With SMS I think the decline in usage versus the backend systems needed to support the service must have helped them to decide the discontinue it.

A related question. How does one remove Hangouts completely off a Smart phone? Never used it don't want to use it just want to get it off my smart devices.

I think you need a custom rom as its a standard app on vanilla Android I think, faniedry might be able to give a more clear answer there.

Ahh, completely forgot about that end if the spectrum having to pay someone to maintain something that be one day be used.

Yes, tried it for a while, but it was cumbersome and unattractive. Used default for a long time, but now prefer Signal now.
