Google I/O

Personally I would have liked to have heard something about the new Nexus range because I want to get a Nexus 7 but didn't see a point if they were going to release 1 in the next few months.

Otherwise I love the improvements they've made in Chrome, G+ and Gmaps. I still need to watch the presentations on Android Studio. Got plenty of time this weekend to catch up on a lot of the presentations :)

Hardly a rant. Google yesterday announced that they are killing their XMPP support in gtalk, just like they killed caldav support in gcal, etc.

What protocol are they using now for Google Hangouts? Is it something they've created? I've read quite a few people are angry about this, since they want their Statuses/Ability to go Invisible/Contact Groups. I can still connect via Pidgin so I don't think they've killed it completely just yet? Seems like people are just ranting for the sake of it? :p

You have to wonder why that "not available for mobile devices" is even a feature on Google. Why block stuff (incl. the mind numbing advertising that goes with said video).

They're using a proprietary API whereas XMPP was open source; similar to how they killed Reader which had an open API, and Caldav and so on. But hey open wins right because technology isn't a zero-sum game and all.

They also said they wouldn't be removing Google Talk anytime in the near future.
