That's why I thought upfront too about Amazon Dot, but I use it often for small things that I actually love :

* I shut off all the lights on the other side of the house while in bed
* I play a Spotify playlist and ask it to shut down in 20 minutes
* If I play a Pandora radio station and here something I like, I ask who it is ... and add to Spotify
* I use it as my alarm - and it's great verbally telling it to stop rather than reaching for a button.
* Then when I'm getting ready, I periodically ask it the time while I'm dressed to see I'm on track for work
* If I want to use Spotify on the HiFi, I ask it to connect to my HiFi and listen there

Small things that add up for me

+1
Yes I agree Google Home has changed the way I do things at home completely - it works well with an ever-increasing range of Sonoff switch and sensor devices and it is a surprisingly accurate voice interface to setting up most daily routines. It (She) also seems to have a similar sense of humour to me when I ask it to tell me a joke.

Think I'm going to get a few of these for the kids rooms and mine. Loved the live event. a few subtle shots were fired across the bow.

interested in these, where you guys looking to buy them from?

i ordered myself a home mini and a chromecast three weeks ago and it arrived yesterday. :) i used aramex global shopper: mini, chromecast, shipping, duties, vat, etc all came to R~1100 in case anyone is curious.

not sure if my wife likes it, but i do. the only problem i have at the moment is setting up multiple users on it. anyone else managed to get that right? i did set it up as US english and changed my phone as well, but that didn't work.

In the Chromecast or the Home Mini? On the home mini you should be able to add another account on Linked accounts. (That's how it works on the Home, will try on the home Mini on Monday)

Did the multi accounts last night... was easy as pie...on the missus phone I installed google home and then linked the device from her phone....job done

I know she doesn’t like it, she has issues talking to machines

These are a far more compatible than Alexa in this country? Ie You can ask it weather and local traffic, or nearby restaurants?

the only time it shows that multi account is now available is if my phone is on vpn with US location, but then it doesn't connect to the home mini. i'll try again this evening and see where it goes.

biggest annoyance for my wife is that you have to say "hey google" all day. would be nice if they allowed you to change the name, which would totally make it seem less like a thing and more like an assistant.

I've got no VPN's running at all and it worked flawlessly linking for me....

My address is a local one as well so the only thing is that its set to use US English.... beyond that, there is no doubt that my Home is in South Africa...

i did read somewhere that i should use US english on the device and i'm pretty sure that i did that, however my phone was SA english when i was setting it up. wonder if that would have made a difference?
