Google Maps for iOS

Looks almost as good as the Android version. Just scaled down.

Nah, I have to say it beats the Android version looks wise, and because iOS is smoother than Android, the iPhone app is more responsive than Android. Remember that not every Android user's got project Butter ala Jelly Bean.

Kudos Google Maps team, the new SDK for Apple is an effective way to say R.I.P. Apple Maps (unless one lives in North Korea).

After playing with this for several minutes, I agree with a previous post - this app is a watered down version of the one on Android. But, this is their first version so no doubt it will improve. But after having used google maps on the large S3 for the last 2 weeks, this seems mickey mouse in comparison.

I don't know how you come to that conclusion, I'm sitting here comparing Maps on an SGS 2 and on a 4s, and the iOS version is just as detailed, smoother in operation, and has more features.

I would presume the new features like auto panorama mode will come to Android soon, but currently the iOS one is better, even the way street view works is easier on iOS, touch map for address popup, touch the address and street view opens, it's just more intuitive, I would say well done to Google, now they need to bring the improvements to Android and then release a proper iPad version as well.

So I tried it today on my way to gym with my iPhone 4.

The gym location was off by 50m, but it worked well with the turn by turn navigation.

The iPhone 4 doesn't have Siri, so this is a welcomed feature with Google Maps.

Definitely better than Apple Maps.

My house is at least 200metres off. Apple maps knows when I am in my front or back garden.

Everything else is awesome and slick though, the 3d is super smooth

The map saga made me upgrade to a Samsung S3 two weeks ago (from having four iPhones previously).

Thanks for the laugh :) I had visions of bulging temple veins, and the kid whose Warcraft account was taken away

I like the voice prompts a lot more on the iOS app than on the Android app. It's a lot easier on the ears and tells you the names of the streets, even though in SA that might not always be an advantage. The Google woman sounds like she's going to whip me if I make a wrong turn.

Seems for iPhone/iPod and not for iPad anyway i am ok with apple maps

Yeah, I haven't found Apple maps deficient for SA at all. It looks like it is drawing its data for this country from TomTom. And while the drummy one causes all kinds of protest in the US, over here it has always been solid.

Google maps for iPhone.

I have no issues with Apple Maps but the new Google Maps is insane. Compared with Google Maps on a mates HTC One X and it's -much- better on my 4S.

Maps Saga Apple vs Google...

I wonder how true this comment is..

This is a real win-win-win for Apple. Before, they were licensing the maps data from Google at some expense, and developing the app themselves. Now Google is doing all the work for them, plus paying them for inclusion in the app store. Net result for customers was a bit of a disruption, but now that Google Maps is free, not really any long-term loss.

Well lets see:
Before:
Apple paid Google to access Google maps (just like any other 3rd party app)
Apple paid in house dev's to design and keep their Google maps app up to date

Now:
Google pay for a a Store account, just like any other dev. Granted this is for all their products not just maps
Google will now have to keep their own app up to date, so it means extra cost.

So I would go with yep looks like it was a win for Apple, Just remember it cost them a pretty penny to do so as they lost "Face" value, bought mapping companies (C3 Technologies, Poly9 and Placebase wasnt exactly cheap) also do not forget the price of the TomTom contract.

My View:

Google just want your search data, be it "where you going" or "what you like" so I am sure they do not mind the $99 p/a cost for the account or the dev team that clearly doing a better job than ex Apply dev's to get at said data.

+1. unlike what people like to think, google is not some altruistic company. EVERY product, android, maps, etc, is all aimed at getting users to ads, I mean search...

Downloaded it yesterday, the interface is just as klunky as Apple Maps.

TomTom app wins hands down, $60 well worth it.
